Didn't skal^bomb invented the collisions stuffs in the physical engines that are everywhere now (nvidia pysx, direct3D,...) ... ?
Wasn't the polygonisation algorithm from "nine fingers" so better than any other at the time, that it was sold to some company ?
Working on very short-sized effects or 3D engines, isn't it a very unique field of research in itself ?
Isn't using computers to display real time graphics just to display effects deeply innovative in itself ?

Maybe a lots of things were invented in the demoscene according to me, the problem is more like: 1. no one care what is really found, and coders will rarely write a paper about it. 2. most demo sources are closed, you never know what algorithm is really used for what in demos (unless you dissassemble and trace it).

I'm not sure what your point is.

krabob: You seem to confuse "inventions" with "good implementations".

What? Method and apparatus for avoiding incrementing counter [image 302] after the last iteration [img 304]?
PATENT GRANTED! Ka-ching.

216: the average patent officer is probably ignorant enough about coding to grant that, but a decent lawyer would tear it to bits in court and you'd be left with a big patent registration fee and no patent.

On the other hand, if you sue small companies without the massive cash piles needed to fight these things in court... they can't afford to fight you in court, the patent doesn't get challenged, and you win by default. (If the patent system is fucked up somewhere, it's right here - this happens, you can't stop it unless you have a LOT of cash (as in millions quite often) for the fight - it's basically a legal form of mugging :(

Demomakers aren't inventors, they combine what they steal from others. Hence the vulgarity, anger & ungodliness: were they axiom-finders, they would be a much happier and more kind bunch (see Bruce Dell).
