I have recently been subject to a management decision at work introducing widescreens in the office.

If it is possible, I'd like to split the widescreen into two virtual screens so that it would work more or less the same way as back when I had two physical screens.

Does anyone know if that is possible?

I tried to quickly check what the features are for nvidia's and ati's virtual screen thingies but they don't seem to have any information available. Fun!

Anyway, for my widescreen netbook, I've just put the application bar to one side of the screen..

I've docked Miranda IM to the right side of the screen, while having the rest of the space available for a (nearly) 4:3 maximized window.

Can you not keep one of your current monitors to go alongside the new widescreen? If there is a way to do dual virtual screens, they're going to be a very odd aspect ratio :)

I have my laptop open next to the widescreen. But that doesn't solve the problem of when having e.g. Visual Studio or Word maximized ... It just looks odd and ugly.

solution: don't maximise, keep two windows side by side

Hmm.. but laptop + screen = 2 screens. Do you want 3? Or do you want to turn off the laptop screen? (I'm assuming you don't have it set to use the laptop + monitor as a single screen, if you do.. well, turn that off :)

just upgrade to windows 7 and use windows snap ;)

the problem is not the number of screens, but more that the screen is widescreen.

start key+m to minimize everything
open up the two windows you want
rightclick taskbar
click show windows side by side

I think it is "stack horizontally" in XP/2000

In Windows 7, just try the Win+Left and Win+Right keys :)

well, this splitview worked like a charm. it basically enabled the win-left/win-right short cut from win7. each program window has two new buttons attached which makes them resize to max-height and half-width and position in either right or left edge.

use 2x 24" or preferably 1x20" and 1x30" wide for your ultimate coding needs :) at least, if you can.

Remember coding on an 80x25 terminal back in the day?
Of course not. Neither do I. I doubt anyone here is that old.

( Actually, "the ISO/ANSI screen size is 80x24". )
