no, it was absolutely not dead - in germany, at least, it was an essential channel of scene communication well into the 2nd half of the 1990s. i, for one, got my first internet access at home only in 2000.
This would deserve a bbs intro.
Not only are there more and more scene boards coming back /X (Ami-Express) bbs software is still in development by myself. I took over development a couple of years ago and since then I have reverse engineered and released updated versions of /X that have many bug fixes and new features.
