Pain charts: 32bit+ vs <32bit
category: general [glöplog]
smash: make a WOW-effect demo like Debris and I'm pretty sure it will happen :)
there aren't enough tits in fairlight demos : make candytron II !
keops: why the hell would he want to do that? Personally, I'd do anything to avoid becoming a demoscene pin-up. My picture on the wall of a load of geeky coders' bedrooms? No thanks! You could end up as a linux wallpaper or anything!
The separation 8/16/32 bit obviously doesnt work as you cannot get an entire group to agree on the width of accumulators, memory busses, data busses and number of floppy disks.
Should you want to make a "division" among platforms keep it simple.. You should manage with mostly "oldskool" "low end" and "high end". While some platforms are easy to define what goes where, I agree that for some others there'll be another discussion alltogether.

when the platforms mix, oldskool guys vote for 50-year-old-watched-once-a-year demos over latest great demos and fuck the charts. if they are split as pc-no pc oldskool-newskool, pc guys vote for and only for tbl as oldskool and fuck their charts this time. but the pc charts are cleaner now which is better :)
Smash: Well, some of us tend to like your stuff a lot better. But you can't tell by looking at the all time top here on pouet.
for the oldskool stuff one category is mostly enough, as normal 4k/64k/demo separation doesn't make sense (for example - vic20 demos are all effectively 4k intros without expansion ram :).
i've no clue how many bits loadys amiga (emulator) is, so i just put alice copper in both lists. hope the editors will pick one or something :)
gargaj: pain isnt a pure pc mag. yes it runs on pc, but it isnt put together exclusively for the pc scene. in fact we even been discussing porting it to other platforms to not limit the viewing capacity. doubt it'll come in time for next issue though. some asm stuff in the engine is a bit tricky to port.
you guys DO know that you don't have to fill out the votesheet at once, right? you can fill a small part of it and come back to it in a few days. no need for "a whole day".
ps: and eurochart even has a windows and linux port, but it's still an amiga mag. pain is as pc as it gets, mostly because noone from the other platforms would accept it as their own.
also, there's no need to port asm stuff, all you would need is to port the article renderer (which is probably C)

psionice: Being a demoscene pinup isn't THAT bad... you've got to fend off a few people who want to kiss you at demoparties but that's survivable. And Linux geeks are too scared of me anyway ;)
melwyn: That's not exactly correct... an unexpanded VIC-20 may only have 3.5K of usable memory, but demos have full disk drive access and thus can use up to 170K of data without any problems (or even more if you can fit the "turn disk" string into RAM ;). So the categories apply even there. What's true tho is that all Atari 2600 demos are in fact 4K because the thing simply can't address more ROM space without external hardware trickery.

gargaj: other platform sceners dont have to accept pain as their own platform mag, just not see it as a pc only mag.
and about porting the engine: if it wasnt more complicated then that we'd had it done already.

eproms and cartridges for atari 2600 with bankswitching are available from atariage
Agree with Melwyn. Combine the 3 less than 32bit to one category.
Best Oldskool Platform Prod
I guess most people will know what is oldskool and what is not.
Say everything up to A500 and Atari STe is Oldskool.
Also, why not have those Pulldown menu things that Eurochart has. Somethimes it hard to think of 8 less than 2year prods that you remember were good.
Also State that you dont have to fill all 8 places, and that all platforms/scenes are included in the general charts. (Should be obvious to most people, but "Voting for dummies " info = More voters)

tft, the pouet top of the month "more..." link is an excellent tool to remember good recent prods.
i think we originally went for the 32bits naming instead of oldskool due to three reasons:
- mobile platforms (they were mostly all <32bits 3? years ago when we first settled for these categories)
- people active on older platforms usually dislike their platform beeing called oldskool
- would give wrong idea to voters (as in that they should vote for older demos instead of new demos for older platforms)
and yes, some of these reasons are abit silly, but thats what i recall from the little memory i have from the debacle. eitherway, we'll defnitly change the categories after this issue. it had already been decided by the staff before these threads were open. sadly the voting had also already started when we agreed on changing the categoiries so we decided to just go with it this one more time and fix it for the next issue.
