I have seeing more and more non-Windows demos not running due to NTVDM CPU. Any ideas? I am using an Athlon 64 4600+ (939; dual core) with 2 GB of RAM, Windows XP Pro. SP2 (all updates), EVGA GeForce 7950 GT KO (512 MB of RAM; PCIE), etc.

You might want to try DOSbox :)
use dosbox. have the same prob. gf 7900 gtx here, intel c2d.
First: Ant, thumbing down all cool 256B intros because you have problem with 16bit subsystem is like singing "I'm a fucking lamer, tra la la" very loudly.
Second: DOSBox should be activated only when intro is really anti-windows. You should rather find solution to solve this global problem, but unfortunatelly I have no idea about it, never had similar problems (also new computer with XP SP2, GeForce 6600, P4 3GHz).

(Many intros aren't smooth under DOSBox, no matter of CPU cycles setting.)
Pirx: Why do coders still make DOS demos then if people can't run them. I can't even get my Audigy 2 ZS sound card to work with an old Windows 95's DOS boot disk.
Yeah, DOSbox is horrbily slow. Same with VMware v4.5.2.

Most of people CAN run small DOS intros everywhere: under all versions of DOS and Windows. I don't know only about Vista. New demos for Windows with big hardware requirement cause much more problems. And only in com program for DOS coders can put wonderful effect in 256 bytes only (I'm passing over indyvidual exceptions, and non-PC platforms) - this is real art, but i see you don't feel (understand) it at all...
Try to set bigger value for CPU cycles in dosbox.conf file to get better speed, or by pressing Ctrl+F12, sometimes helps.

Moving to Win32 with 256-byte intros sounds like a really clueless solution.
I'd go for some easily emulatable classic platform if MS-DOS compatibility is not available. Or maybe even some new virtual machine that optimizes for code density, emulation speed and simplicity/portability.
