Demoscene after the oil crash.
category: general [glöplog]
I was wondering... now we are getting close to the oil crash:
http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net
Will the demoscene survive to the oil crash ?
Maybe we can manage to have electricity, but new computers will be rare. their cost will explode; we will be compeled to use old computers, forever. It will certainly be the end of the parties, because there will be no more cars or planes. But maybe the internet will still be there.
Maybe we will not give a shit anymore, because problem number one will be to cultivate tomatoes to survive.
Sceners are known for their hability to find simple answers to inextricable questions. Do you have any clue about this ?

Where's MacGyver when you need him?
He's travling through a stargate to another world that still has oil and thus where the demoscene survives. Go MacGyver!
nextempire demos would never be the same again. imagine rush hour with electronic police cars... phew.
Oh. How I wish I was Macgyver... I would probablly have better grades.
Obviously we'll jump to a new platform.

I take it that you're not that old, since the good old days had parties more or less in a local affair.
Sure, no more Breakpoints, but that's hardly the end of the world (har-dee-har).
What's wrong with a bike-trip to Breakpoint? I mean, it's only once a year...
the scene will have to switch to laptops powered by children ([url=http://wiki.laptop.org/wiki/One_Laptop_per_Child]mit laptop[url])
damn i always screw up those url tags. here
from the site I previously linked, I have some elements for an answer:
!!!
Again more incredible:
now, you can panic !
Quote:
The production of one gram of microchips consumes 630 grams of fossil fuels. According to the American Chemical Society, the construction of single 32 megabyte DRAM chip requires 3.5 pounds of fossil fuels in addition to 70.5 pounds of water.
!!!
Quote:
The construction of the average desktop computer consumes ten times its weight in fossil fuels. The Environmental Literacy Council tells us that due to the "purity and sophistication of materials (needed for) a microchip, . . . the energy used in producing nine or ten computers is enough to produce an automobile."
Again more incredible:
Quote:
When considering the role of oil in the production of modern technology, remember that most alternative systems of energy — including solar panels/solar-nanotechnology, windmills, hydrogen fuel cells, biodiesel production facilities, nuclear power plants, etc. — rely on sophisticated technology.
now, you can panic !
Quote:
all electrical devices make use of silver, copper, and/or platinum, each of which is discovered, extracted, transported, and fashioned using oil-powered machinery. [...] To produce a ton of copper requires 112 million BTU's or the equivalent of 17.8 barrels of oil. The energy cost component of aluminum is twenty times higher.
the scene is dead anyway, why bother?
but we must all support american troops at iraq because they're fighting for western style of living!
mein auto fährt auch ohne wald!
quit the scene go home and be farmers
