AI, other helping tools, and Amiga pixel graphics
category: residue [glöplog]
I haven't found a good thread about tools in use, or artificial intelligence (AI) and Amiga pixel graphics. Whats found is often messy and lack of respect of various views.
Purpose of this thread is to discuss Amiga graphics related to AI or other tools used in pixel graphic. A bit inspired (forced? :)) by CopAss, sim and bifat here and maybe continue such discussion here.
Please provide links, screenshots etc what you want to highlight
* with/without AI as a tool with graphics, can you compare with other tools (why, why not)
* Credit AI in work (ethical not to credit AI? why/why not, how large proportion was made by AI...)
* Amiga graphics identity compare with other platforms, does that exist?
* Old school graphic compo (workstages, what are the rules in -current- compos)?
Some background research:
AI art in compos, thread starter: Farfar (2022-08-15))
AI is forcing the hand of the Demoscene., thread starter: Photon (2023-07-01)
AI crap in compo entries?, thread starter: hornpipe2 (2024-04-01), summarized by AI -here-
Feel free to add your own related links to topic.
Technical Amiga graphics, a definition:
With pixel graphic on Amiga, I would say anything between 320x256 to 640x512, max 256 colors. However, usually 4 bitplanes (16 colors) and lowres (320x256) are used, sometimes a synonym to "old school graphics".

not this shit again
if you can't draw, fucking learn how to do it, stop it with the genAI bullshit. I don't want to see it. 99% of the scene doesn't want to see it.
The other 1% can fuck right off into the sun, thanks! 🥰

I want to see it - IF you coded (and trained) the AI all by yourself

i can count the amount of times i actually appreciated AI art in demos on my 6 fingers

100% this a thousand times over.
Fuck techbro AI. Infinite fuckings to everyone using it.
I talked with an artist friend earlier today, and asked him if he had been painting since we last talked.
He said yes, and showed an oil painting. I said that hey, you couldn't use AI to help with that, and he said that actually, he had used AI to plan the painting.
So yeah. There's different levels of AI use. Some are more acceptable than others.

Techbro AI != all AI tools, however.
Quite frankly at this point entering Oldskool graphics compo for me is just for showing artwork at this point. Too many conversions in the top spots with AI art or with faked workstages. A good telling for a lot of these people that were pointed out in the previous thread was the fact there were able to do so many contributions or productions in a year. Sometimes people just don't even hide it like in Transmute by Duskwave, where Midjourney was listed as one of the programs.
Amiga GFX has become such a boring category these days that I'm more interested in taking a shot at making Atari 8-bit, Speccy(although you can find a good dose of bad AI conversions there too) or MS-DOS EGA graphics these days, because they stick out in the sea of wonderfully pixelled conversions.

How about generating this discussing using AI as well?
that went to residue fast ;) fuckings to pretenders
Wonder why. But interesting (again) to compare stance vs. use of expletives.
It's hard to discuss bullshit without expletives when bullshit itself is an expletive
Thanks for some interesting views.
yea lets awake this residue again, we do have high ambitions with this thread :)
I believe its very a very diverse matter how we deal with AI in graphics. In the Amiga scene it feels very unsettled. Not that I expect us to find consensus, but to understand, and maybe this is splitting the Amiga identity in a way it has not before?

Interesting, but why do you not trust that people will find your art they way you create it (I assume without using AI)? Are you doing art for others or for you?

absence: No, not my cup of tea. That article we credited to AI, and if you scroll to the end of it, its also written that we prefer personal views. Articles we collect for diskmags, we can not be sure how they are done, as language can be disgused to be less R2D2 and more human... In the end, I believe trust and transparency is the way.

Does that include when you are not sure if AI included?el mal: i can count the amount of times i actually appreciated AI art in demos on my 6 fingers

For myself for the most part (there are of course specific requests or commissions) - the pics I draw are based on what I'm currently inspired by instead of trying to appeal to a theme or audience. I do a lot of pixel art outside of compos as well and Amiga is usually my platform of choice for those.
But at the same time there's just the allure of unexplored. Amiga has a very elegant way of handling a palette and you can do a lot of good stuff on it. CGA or EGA is absolutely dreadful in the colour choices and technical hurdles one have to go through to make it work (fucked up aspect ratio on modern PCs), Spectrum feels more like constructing a puzzle rather than drawing and Atari... that's just mindbending on what you can achieve switching modes on a scanline. But I feel there's a lot to be accomplished there and to show off during compos instead of going for the easy to work with choice (Amiga) which is currently saturated with AI conversions.

So AI has a larger challenge with Atari 8-bit and Speccy than Amiga, your interest dropped. Why not continue do graphic on Amiga your way and ignore others? Do you mean that your graphic is not seen enough so its unfair in compos?
Here is an article I wrote on the topic Amiga, AI, tools and graphics. May be interesting to this thread
