Amiga Demoscene Music - First Minutes

category: music [glöplog]
Person A: "Give me convenience or give me death! I need to consume the way I want to consume and I'm entitled to it! And I don't want to hear what the authors think about the way of my consumption of their stuff!" (let's not call it art here and now)
Person B: "That sounds consumerist."
Person A: "How dare you?!"

I hereby ask for it.

4gentE: Yeah, back when bifat released Hologon to disk via mailswap (avoiding parties and online release altogether), i've heard complaints about that being "elitist".

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but surely it's the author's prerogative to determine how things should be... spread, anyways. Not so much how they should be consumed.

and i don't want to consume the narrow-minded posts by you three!
Elitist? Such a nonsense, I have sent the disk to everybody who asked for one (and many who didn't :-)

bifat: Exactly. :) But i've understood it more in a way that it was elitist towards anybody not owning an actual Amiga. =)

(And to be precise about the spread vs consumption thing, uploading captures to YT or similar or not is covered by the "spread clause" - once there is a capture in any form, okay to c&d it, but not so much that form of consumption itself.)

I (kinda) see it this way. If I create my sculpture on the top of a mountain, that means I want you to climb the f*cking mountain in order to enjoy my sculpture. If my 2024 scene artifact is as an executable for Sinclair ZX Spectrum, that means I want you to use that hardware in order to enjoy it. I’m aware that not everyone has access to vintage hardware in working condition. Being no “purist” (as I’ve been branded) and no “elitist” (as someone else has been branded) I think emulation is a very close second to real hardware. By all means a totally viable vessel of consumption. Yet every prod gets its way to f*cking youtube. Multiple copies in fact. And not by the authors. Just mentioning this here (ok, perhaps in my clumsy and not very adorable style, but that’s not on purpose), I got jumped on, then warned by admins.

Why do you think that is?

Clout-chasing, mostly; used to be ad money but that seems to be harder to get since YouTube tightened the belt on that one, so it's just the views and subs.

There's a deluge of anonymous YT channels who upload terrible quality captures and get indignant when you ask them to take them down.

Well, there are more honourable efforts around as well.

I don’t know. Classical logic would suggest it’s because there is a demand for it. Living human internet. On the other hand, 21 century logic whispers to me that the advent of machine “intelligence” will furtherly inflate the amount of these channels. Dead machine internet.

I don't think the idea of the First Minutes videos was bad, but my mistake was to upload it to YouTube, a PUBLIC video sharing site, and it's annoyed many creators I didn't mean to annoy by exhibiting their work, when they may not want it to be exhibited, in a very diluted form. I've already had comments from YouTube users asking where they can get this music, and it's not mine to share. I really wish I hadn't done this now.

If Demozoo could host the videos instead, it would be better, surely? A site devoted to the scene, not just everything in human video existence. The alternative is to remove the videos from YouTube but make them available via a download site like Google Drive or whatever, right?

I'm the total opposite of indignant, I really feel like taking them down this evening and finding some other, private, means of sharing only to those who ask.

I've just received some comments about removing certain prods and have promptly deleted the whole bunch of videos and playlists off of YouTube.

My apologies to anyone I ticked off :(

non-commercial things like Demozoo (they can host videos, can't they?)

No.

Well, technically we do host files, but only to the extent necessary for the site to function, such as screenshots and mirroring original music files to work with the embedded audio player, and our infrastructure for that consists of me paying 7 quid a month for an Amazon S3 account. (The hosting for the site itself is kindly sponsored by zetta.io.) So basically, we're no more or less able to host videos than any other person with a credit card.

Given that Demozoo already makes a huge number of tracker module soundtracks available for instant playback, in full length, original format and credits attached, I don't really see what added value this would provide.

These videos of mine have proved quite divisive, and I suspect the same would be true whether they were a private download or on YouTube. The earlier guy was right, I have BUTCHERED these works to be honest, and whilst some see it as an oddity and possibly slightly useful, others have objected strongly. And as long as these videos exist, this whole sorry episode will forever be remembered, and I want to write off the project as a bad idea not fully thought-out.

No need to be crestfallen.

I'd totally watch some kind of Mystery-Science-Theater-3000-like Amiga-MOD commentary thingy, though!

Wish I had seen this in time. Might have helped me identify the mystery tunes on my old cassette tapes with Amiga music.

I've still got the original videos, but I'm still deciding whether or not to get rid of them completely.

I question why anything here should be "convenient" in the first place. Did anybody ask for this service? For me as an artist this is grossly disrespectful, and I'd wish that all productions I have contributed to would be excluded.
Quote:
Well they certainky can express their disgust when being asked, and issue takedowns on Youtube. What else should be necessary?

Bifat, I do apologise for featuring a few of your prods on YouTube without asking, but do you object to HOW your prods are featured on the videos themselves OR that I uploaded them onto a public place like YouTube? Perhaps both? I certainly did NOT try to monetize the videos, BTW.

Would you object if the videos were by download only, like from a private link? The service has proven useful to others in finding prod music they may be interested in, after all.

I've decided to terminate the project by tomorrow, and the videos will be deleted. I don't know what possessed me to start the stupid divisive thing in the first place, I guess I had too much time on my hands :/

Maybe I should make a demo about it instead.

Two demos! Taking opposite stances, released under different labels.

And both demos must have seeking support.
