Book draft: Introduction to demoscene

category: general [glöplog]

At the beginning of 2022, I was at the Institute of Networked Society at the China Academy of Art and offered a series of lecture "Introduction to the demoscene".

Most of my students come from humanities and art backgrounds, they have usually studied courses like art criticism, contemporary art, art theory, and are familiar with contemporary art and new media art exhibitions and works like Documenta and Ars Electronica. But almost all of them have never heard of demoscene.

The course is divided into four units, the first of which introduces the historical context and cultural elements of the demoscene, the second the platform used by the demoscene, which is the primary basis for classifying demoscene works, the third unit focuses on chip music, which is the part of the demoscene that is closely linked to popular culture, and the fourth unit introduces the community and cultural challenges of the demoscene. challenges of the demo scene.

As an Asian observer of the demoscene is facing huge cultural differences, in this series I use some Chinese and Japanese cultural phenomena as comparisons to help my students understand the concepts involved, but also to show how cultural differences work in the context of the Internet. I believe it is also an opportunity for readers outside of Asia to learn about digital culture in East Asia.

This series is compiled from classroom recordings and translated from Chinese. Since English is my second language, there may be many errors, so if you are willing to help with corrections, feel free to submit a pull request to github.

btw, will any European publisher be willing to publish it? I was contacted by some Chinese publisher, but they thought the topic was too niche to be a money-losing venture.

very cool and interesting. Was everyone's final project to make a demo about it?

What else do you need besides grammar and spelling PRs?
I skimmed the proofs and found them fascinating. I think this work is a material advance for me. It is great to see the collected references and your personal national interested represented. I think this is an excellent contribution - thank you for sharing.

I think your question of finding a publisher is relevant. I think your work would benefit from the publishing process. I cannot think of a suitable publisher in my network today... But I that changes I will let you know.

Since I've only lived in China and Canada, and my only party experience comes from the US parties Synchrony, @party, and Demosplash, I may not be describing things accurately in Europe or leaving out some important facts, and personally, while I've done quite a bit of reading, I'm not all that confident about chapters 2 and 3.

Github's issue 2 is a good example

Because my students had few experience with programming, their final assignments were short papers, and most of the assignments I received were on computer platforms.

I think this is related to an earlier semester in my practical archaeology/media archaeology course, in which I demonstrated many old computers.

There is the option of self publishing (print on demand, so no big money involved like it was about 20 years ago).
