RIP Ben Daglish (C64 musician)

category: general [glöplog]

This is a few days late (apologies for that) but I'm sure you all by now are aware that Ben Daglish, the C64 musician responsible for music in games such as The Last Ninja and Firelord, has since passed away, due to lung cancer. He'd had a bout of this some time ago and was known to be in remission, but it came back and bit him on the bum :(

He will be sorely missed for sure. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times, once in Brighton, UK at a Back in Time event there and also at the Centre for Computing History museum in Cambridge, where he gave a talk alongside Archer Maclean and others. There is footage of this from Facebook and Youtube.

He was a big influence in the scene and will be missed.

"Dearest friends,

For those of you who don't already know I'm deeply sorry to pass on the news that Ben died very suddenly on Monday morning. We know that it will come as a shock to many of you as it has to us. We are all at home feeling loved and supported, and our thoughts are with all of you who knew, loved, got irritated by and were lucky enough to have a little bit of his magic in your lives.

I'll send out details of what's happening as soon as we have sorted everything out.

If you would like to share any photos or thoughts with us our brilliant friend Debbie has set up bendaglishphotos@gmail.com - we would love to hear from you.

Sarah, Jake, Rhianna and Lottie xxx"

Ben was a prolific composer and all round good guy, regardless of whether your music came from the C64 (where he started) through to the modern remakes that I've seen him play numerous times at various events.

It was certainly an inspiration to me. I remember the first time I heard the music of Deflektor on my Amstrad CPC. What a wonderful use of those three channels!

I loaded the game hundreds of times just to enjoy that incredible music. I'm talking about my infancy in the 80's. When I realized that it was possible to get that wonderful sound on a computer, I knew that I had to become a composer myself.

I still consider that tune one of the masterpieces of 8-bit computer music. In fact, most of Ben Daglish tunes are extraordinary.

RIP

He also did some great ATARI ST conversions.
Deflektor, Switchblade, Super Cars...
I remember playing those because of the tunes.

I liked this a lot as a tribute:
