Thoughts on anonymized compos

I agree about this being a non-issue for graphics compos (thumbnails and all), but it might make sense for music and demo/intro compos. Leave out the group, just show the demo and maybe a comment.

Another thought. Why not randomize the demo compos btw. I remember e.g. evoke demo compos to be "best demos last". If you have 20 demos in a compo you can't remember which was which, especially if you don't take notes, which is anal anyway and then you're drunk and smoke too much weed and have danced all night to the D&B set... Well. It would suck in a way, I agree, but it would be way more fair... I might be mistaken here, but it always felt like a preselection to me.

Reminds me that I should really go to a party again this year...

How about letting the contestants decide?

Just add an option to the entry upload form in partymeister stating "I prefer this compo to [be held anonymous] / [show the artists' names]".

After the upload deadline there's an official announcement how the contestants decided, maybe even with numbers (65.3% decided to hold the compo anonymous).

...or make audio easyly accessible in the voting interface (yeah, still not the same as thumbnails, but... )

Let's not have the "random compo ordering" discussion here, please. 1) it's not related to this topic 2) we already had it 6 pages ago 3) if you treat this thread as a write-only brainfart dumping ground, the compo organisers you're trying to reach are even LESS likely to pay attention to it.

I try to vote for music stuff during the compo itself, because there's 20 entries, I'll remember 3 distinctive ones, and vaguely remember maybe 3 more from the name. And maybe the fact I can't remember the other 13 says something about those, but still, most of them were good and deserve some recognition.

So yeah, an mp3 preview (because I don't have playback for all the formats, especially oldschool stuff) would be an instant big voting quality win I reckon.

I added audio-snippet-preview to Wuhu; still testing locally but it seems to work nice. (yay SoX!) Gonna do some more refactoring that I was putting off for a while now, and then I'll push it to Shithub.

That being said I doubt this matters much in the grand scheme of things?

gasman: I think the entry ordering thing is related. If someone wants to increase anonymity in compos, I think they want to get the voting results to be more like "objective prod quality measurements", and get rid of factors that they feel are external to the entry, like social relationships and interactions happening at the party place, reputation, etc. Which, IMO, is the core of the disagreement. "May the best entry win" vs. "may the best people win". Separate the people from the entries?! What for? How far?

There are different views and ideologies. Left wing and right wing views. Currently, there is some kind of a balance between these, and the question is, should the balance be adjusted to one direction or the other. Sounds very much like a grand-scheme-of-things question to me.

Gargaj: Looking forward to have that for next TRSAC! :)

psonice: Agreed - Live voting (thanks again Gargaj!) is a pretty great thing in general to make people vote more - and while they remember.

Oh, gargaj added live voting? Thanks from me too then, that's a really big help :) And I think some audio preview will really help for the music compos. It's always a busy competition, often with many tracks in similar styles (dnb etc.)

Revision already included audio clips of all music compos last year, and Partymeister has had livevoting support for some years as well. Time to visit a demoparty! ;)
Better yet..
Randomized compo results!

This way name or "quality" would not alter the voting.
Win-Win!!

saga: yeah, i know live voting has been in for some years, it's not been *that* long since my last party :D Was saying thanks for adding it. Don't recall audio previews though, but then I've still not made it to revision :(

1in10: or random reassignment of entries to participants! for that "omg, i sound like hoffman!"-feeling!

but... two entries sounded like hoffman last year. :P

I don't know that releasing names or not makes much of a difference, to me. While not everyone may vote based on content, I can't imagine that if a popular artist put out a song in a compo that someone didn't like that they'd still give them five stars anyway. (This assumes of course they were in the hall at the time it was played, or at least listened to it inside of Partymeister when they assigned their vote, and weren't off drunk in the toilet tunnel or by the fire ring... which is potentially a really big assumption, but I digress.)

It also used to be (I think it was changed in 2016) that Revision had non-anonymous compos anyway, as songs were uploaded to the party intranet FTP site with full name info before voting closed. So I think it's less of a question of "Will non-anonymous voting change anything?" but "How many people actually bothered to try to name vote?"
I was pretty certain that some parties had randomized results for years!

I've been returning after long idling so almost no one knew me, I've been submitting my work under stupid name and I've been submitting my first work to the demo party ever and in all these cases I used to get into top3 and sometimes to beat people much known than me, so not sure that the namevoting is really a thing (just out of personal experience). If your shit is good, shit is good.

Seems the Revision organizing changed some rules:

With the arrival of a stable live-voting system and an improved entry viewing/listening system in partymeister we will no longer anonymize the music and graphic competitions. After the party we will compare the voting statistics to see if name-voting is indeed winding down and if we can keep on displaying the author of an entry for these competitions.
