Unreal 4 engine now free
category: code [glöplog]
it was far less 'click around a bit and you have a demo' last time i tried it ;)

I don't think people are making those sorts of demo in commercial engines, though: it's simply not interesting to make a rendering-tech-code-porn demo if it's not your own rendering tech. (Or maybe they are doing, and I'm just unaware of it, which would kind of prove your point...) I think the people using commercial engines are more inclined to focus on storytelling, or art, or humour, and so those are the criteria they'll be judged on.
Yup yup!
Oh and should professional programmers (in multimedia, games or related) with X years of experience also compete in a different compo? Eventually you'll take home a fair bit of what you've learned in the office after all. Does it help you win compos?
(in my case I started losing when I started working :) But there are less brow-furrowing examples)
Also wait: that's a bit like the failed "newcomer compo" concept right?
The bottom line is that, at least how I see it and poorly word it: the creativity in our compos (at least the executable ones) has substantially shifted from shaving cycles off an innerloop to putting together bigger efforts, inevitably with the help of 3rdparty products.
Just to mess a little with my mates Igor and Kusma: what about a special compo for those very special people out there who still use D3DX? ;)

Sceners won't like using other people's engines, they prefer to build their own.
I think you'll find that what sceners really don't like is finding idiotic blanket statements attributed to them by other sceners, or people watching the scene, or people not even doing that.

(insert random statements attributed to them by other sceners)
:D
10 things sceners really don't like! Number 7 had me crying!
Here's my list of 10 sceners I don't like:
..oh wait...
..oh wait...
that's cool. i can do boring flyby on android now^^ :)
how is that different to all the demos you did on PC so far? ;)
You can watch them on the sidewalk. ;)
There's Youtube on Android too.
Not the same, Mr. Buzzkill. RT or die. ;)
(not to mention the usual mobile bandwidth/connectivity issues)

tomaes: the only true benefit for real time on android is when you're waiting for a bus or train in the winter and have cold hands, run a few demos and then hold your phone between your hands!
I remember people at Mekka clapping along with my bouncy buildings and techno beats.
They were watching an AVI and listening to Chris Liebing.
Best day of my life!
