What makes a good final version?
category: general [glöplog]
I'm about to make a final version of my mostly partycoded 4k demo. Besides technical changes (better performance, stray pixels fixed, resolution picker, auto-exiting) I'm also thinking of tweaking the scenes a bit.
What do you think, where's the line between improving a demo and tweaking it so much that it more or less becomes a new demo?
I'm thinking of minor changes such as removing the fog from the very last scenes (where I didn't intend to have that much fog), slightly modified camera paths and adding some more bits to one "boring" scene (which I intended to do but forgot in my partycoding hurry).
Though I'm going to leave the often liked / criticized colours as they are, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and changing those would totally give the demo a new look imo.

I think it's totally okay to change everything if it brings you closer to what you originally had in mind. Say you just somehow ended up with the current color scheme when the deadline was near and you never got around to tweaking it: In that case I see no point in keeping the current scheme just because it happened to be in that state when you stopped working on it.
For me, a final is what would have happened if the deadline was extended by a week or two (or a month). Or if I was actually able to finish something before a party.

Yeah, I am totally fine with the colors, especially that scene with primary RGB happy crystal colors. RGB is Nintendo. Nintendo is good.
Just do whatever you wanna do in order to make the intro as you intended it to be.
I'm actually kind of surprised that 4k needs a final :) The only thing I might change is the colours, since they're a bit RGB... but then, they do kind of work too, so maybe not even that :)
I think it is ok to improve it so much it changes into a new demo. If that is how you see the end result, than that is exactly how it should be. Ofcourse you could release that as a new intro at another party as well :)
I think a FINAL is about improving and fine tuning what is already there. So the final would be like ~80-90% identical to the partyversion - otherwise you can easily feel the two prods disconnected, and if that is the case, you overdid the finalizing concept imo :)
IMO:
1. already included scenes can fine tuned - not changed!
2. new scenes can be included - but old scenes stay put!
3. adjusting colors/cams/sync can fine tuned

the worst that can happen is that people prefer to run the party version.
- polishing the colour palettes
- finetuning sountrack synch

Party version: How the deadline allowed it to be.
Final version: How you really want it to be.
