Any xp-erts out there who can help me.

I'd say trying to keep XP alive on a computer that will be mostly used for watching cat pics is daring.

I still use Windows XP Pro SP3 at home! It works good for old stuff, not new stuff like demo(nstration)s, games, etc. ;P

Yeah, it seems to work really well for posting "didn't work on my old, updated Win XP Pro SP3" comments on Pouet! And for catching malware targeted towards a now unsupported system, of course.
Just went back to xp from win7, and my old lappy is back to its powers finally. Avast and spybot will take care of security & dropbox for backup of really important stuff.

Missus pc got on its knees every 2 month because of malware/viruses. Installed Ubuntu 12 LTS 4y ago (shitty acer travelmate, 7y old) and it still works like a charm.
No learning curve needed for Firefox, printing pdfs, organizing ebooks with Calibre and browsing photos with Shotwell.

"Missus pc got on its knees every 2 month because.."

..there was no proper virus scanner installed. never had such problems with avast&spybot. and I keep up not only my pc with that, but all close family pcs.

avast&spybot

+1 for spybot but I stick mainly to avg - avast has always been slow and buggy for me.
Then again clamtk and freshclam -d do the job ;P
