yeah but those plugins slow the buffering down considerably down and the network engineer in me cringes everytime your traffic is routed across the globe to finally reach some datacenter a few (hundred) kilometers away...
the main problem with youtube is its own success. there are a lot of video platforms out there, but nobody goes there to look for content and hence nobody uploads their (official) video stuff there either... vimeo being an exception for a certain artsy audience.
