GIFs: 3D pictures become possible with two straight lines as they say.

For sure our brain does a little something, but for the very cool running dog gifs i'm quite sure we could remove the straight lines, the dog going out of the pic would be enough to fool us. Also i would like to compare squirrel anim with/without bars.

Well, all these samples are also VERY obvious "3D effects", imho. The lines sure seem to add a stark contrast in "depth", thus making it look more 3D... but yeah. I think they would look the same without them. Try placing your fingers infront of the bars and they still look quite the same.

I think it works better if it first seems the bars are part of the page!
Here on the blue the effect seems less ... effective ... with white bars

The trick is that the bars give you a reference at what depth the screen is relative to the image (that's why they really should be the page's bg color instead of white). As soon as you put objects in front of the bars, the brain "knows" they should be in front of the screen -> instant slight 3D effect.
