ASSEMBLY Summer 2012
category: parties [glöplog]
smash: just don't make any more demos/intros for this year, mmkay? :)
(just kidding of course, we want to see more!)
(just kidding of course, we want to see more!)
Except the next step is "maybe this other demo should win, because the author is black; no black person has ever won best demo, and we don't want people to think we're racist!" :)
let's just disqualify fairlight for next year and see how that goes!
[maybe that's why it is a cncd demo :P]
honestly i got the feeling of "oh not those guys again" this year, so maybe we should leave ourselves out next time :)
so, who'll bribe the jury to downvote "those guys" next year? ;)
I'm sure rez would be willing to do so. ;)
smash: there are several discussions going on about what should be done next year. Hopefully something good comes out of it, but I leave that to the new Awards crew an jury - as of now, I'm done.
what smash said + only demos and intros should be nominated (ie no games and animations)
how about no.
smash: no don't black out next time, do it better and more finished instead .)
SUKKZ!
On a related note, the demo compo studio seems to be online, if there's someone who didn't find it yet.
Oh no! I can't watch this :(
Oh dear lord. I hope nobody interested in learning about the demoscene ever watches that.
5.6 GB? well, is there somewhere a more lightweight version?
I liked it :)
I'm impressingly coherent considering the amount of alcohol in my system..
Found the youtube version of it... Well - not worth downloading 5+ gb.

Actually I have to agree with many things gloom said. Not sure yet whether that's a good or a bad thing.

las: I haven't seen it yet, but I seem to recall I qualified that with something along the lines of "...or at least the BBS" or something. Which isn't quite true of course, but in a world where I have to pick from either sending them to the Pouet BBS or not, I choose not. :)
I don't know what's wrong with the bbs as long as you strongly keep in mind that pouet != scene and scene != pouet :)
[ot]Again, mad props to Gargaj for introducing categories in the BBS and the option to hide threads marked as "residue" from the main page.[/ot]
msqrt: the problem is the "as long as" :) Newcomers aren't able to. Thankfully, a lot of them keep lurking, which is good.
Also, watching the video, this was pretty much all I kept thinking:

Some personal suggestions regarding the awards:
- The jury should be public. Kuzma suggested to split the jury into groups that can judge a certain category. I personally like "numb res" better than "spin", but since I'm not a musician, I would never dare to judge.
- I would definitely move the award ceremony to a scene-related event (which Assembly is not (anymore)).
- It's nice to try something new, but adding "funny" non-sceners turns out to be risky.
- I think the diplomas looked kind of cheesy (sorry), but why not 3d-print little statues for the nominees as well?
- I honestly believe that part of the job of jury is to balance. If Smash needs a new apartment to store all that metal, maybe it would be more interesting to diversify.
- I really miss the category introductions by sceners. I loved that part in the first couple of ceremonies.
That said: I love the awards, no matter how much people complain about it. That people discuss and bitch about the jury decisions, makes even more valuable.
