The sold out print book, Demoscene The Art of Real-Time, is now available as an eBook!

Our lazy asses never got around printing the second edition while we still got lots of people asking for a copy and also different educational institutions wanting to use the book as a part of their curriculum.

So here it is, downloadable via http://www.demoscenebook.com and payable with PayPal etc.

The book is in PDF format.

Applying a DRM or any kind of copy protection to a book covering the cracking scene would obviously be a total waste of time ;). However the eBook is watermarked with purchase data like your name/email by the distribution engine and some gfx tweaks we apply our selves.

Anyway, in the end the only way is to rely on you respecting the work of your fellow sceners. Should you want to share a copy, please ask your friends to buy one instead.

We are looking for more eBook resellers. You can easily add a simple link to your website and we will naturally pay a commission (15%). Affiliates need a PayPal account and you need to register to E-junkie which is the digital distribution platform.

If have a problem with this watermarking. If someone takes the file from me and does copies from it without my knowledge, the police will come knocking on my door and I will have to prove I did nothing wrong (and probably fail so I will take the blame).

I don't buy watermarked music files and the same goes with everything else.

Have to say I don't feel very motivated to buy a book which is so much targeted toward the north Europe part of the demoscene.

As somebody from the southern part, the C64 was definitely not the most common machine around (way too expensive compared to other machines), so well around 1983-1986 most of the people I knew had an Alice, Amstrad CPC, 8bit Atari, Oric, Spectrum, Thomson, etc... I knew ONE person who had a Vic 20, and two with C64.

The same thing happened later with the Amiga.

So imo, a book with such a title should be a bit more representative of the actual situation at this period of time. Then of course it may be an indication that demos made in the south of Europe don't really count as demoscene production ;)

what? someone made a demo on an alice? ;)

If this is true for all printing then you should be able to rip it to a pdf by printing. Do it and upload.

Dip: I found your review to be equal to, or surpassing, the level of subjectivism you accuse to book of having - just in the other direction. :)

i thought you guys would be giving away the pdf. since you're already sold out, i'd figure that you have covered the expenses.

i think the review by dip is good & accurate.

The visible watermarks (name/email/purchase id) are placed on every page, but in the page margin, not overlapping the content. Except for the covers. Hidden stuff are minor tweaks in the content itself, not bothering the reading experience in anyway.

We've also been nice and left the cut marks to every corner should you want to print, cut and enjoy the book in a printed format. Cutting even removes the visible watermarking from the page margins.

So, of course one can remove the visible watermarking with photoshop or Koala painter, I don't care as long as it is for your personal use only. It was already possible to rip the printed book in a similar manner. Haven't seen a scanned copy being spread yet, tho.

Should someone distribute a ripped copy, I'm not going to spit at your face, but it is your own responsibility. In my opinion ripping and spreading our scene work is similar to us starting to sell someone's demos for money. Lame, but naturally doable.

Any money we make out of this is more or less spent on future demoscene related projects like we've done in the past (and drinking of course, which is the main reason for not releasing it for free). Hell, if the book sells more than 1000 eCopies, I'll promise to hire a stripper for the next Boozembly.

I'll update the links on the website, you're right they're quite outdated. Like it was stated in the past when the print book was released, this is only one subjective piece of work aimed to introduce the book to new audiences, students, girlfriends etc.

I think Freax was supposed to be the official history book, but it is as subjective as anything else. This is always the case, look how long it took to put that great piece of work together.

In my opinion scene is best documented via all the websites, books and works released and maintained by all of us. As long as we keep on linking and respecting each others efforts to keep it alive and accurate.
