Assembly 2014
category: parties [glöplog]
and recording or live, put the beam crew where they can see and hear the compos! Apparently they only learned about the screetch late . . .
Was I the only one who wasn't all that bothered about the screetch? Maybe my wonderful earplugs (lost during the flight back :-/) protected me.

- limiting the compo to just one machine, like Amiga OCS + 512 pseudo fast (hey why not Amiga because it's the 30th anniversary). So it will be possible to at least compare entries with each other even if you don't know that particular piece of old hardware. Comparing demos for totally different machines is extremely difficult and people don't like to make demos for a mishmash compo like that
This was a dumb idea when the 'weird platforms' were pushed out of the oldskool category in 2012, and it still is. "We think that people are discouraged from competing in the oldskool compo because the range of platforms is too diverse. Therefore we will dump 75% of the potential entries into an even more diverse compo."
I don't get why people see platform diversity in compos as a bug to be fixed. In general, demoparty audiences ARE smart enough to adjust their votes to account for different platform capabilities - there are countless examples of demo compos where a VIC-20 or an AdventureVision or an AVR microcontroller has convincingly won against much more powerful hardware. There are also countless examples of oldskool demos being massively overrated because they played a shitty one-channel rendition of Never Gonna Give You Up or something, but that doesn't make one result more "correct" than the other. Ultimately, demo compo entries are judged on their ability to entertain a bunch of drunkards and/or gamer lamers who may or may not know anything about the technical accomplishment, and that's true of ANY compo. Even if you manage to provide a totally level playing field on platforms, you're still judging cutting-edge tech against art against hypno-glow against animation against wob-wob-wob against nyan-cat against penis jokes.
Fuck around with the oldskool category however you want. Kill it off for all I care. I'm going to carry on writing the demos I want to write, not the ones that fit someone's grand plan for a "more focused" compo, and if that means they go in the wild compo or a different party entirely, so be it.

(BTW, Assembly actually checks your luggage? That's the first party ever I've heard that actually does this.)
that was the case at ASM already in 2005. however, if your luggage was big enough, security guards couldn't be bothered to check it entirely.
gasman: yeah, there were at least two entries in Wild that I said "Why are these in Wild and not Oldskool? What am I missing?" PWP being a glaring example, and that CBM thing.
Gasman: the question is, how to get people motivated and convinced that it's worth it to make an oldschool demo for the next Asm. Compo rules are of course only one part of the equation. But getting enough entries has been a problem for a long time already. Any suggestions?
Can we just have a low end competition that has to have hardware that you can buy and it's not just a PC or Mobile production that's on a wierd display.
Some of the weird displays have been weird enough IMO, but if it's just square pixels why take a video when you could show the framebuffer directly on the big screen. If that makes your prod a PC demo it should be shown as such ;)
ways to motivate folks to enter an oldschool compo:
-ruleset with specific limitations or concepts to inspire folks
-workshop events
-reach out to makery people, who go for oldschool the way they go for Wild
-link to tools than can be used by folks who don't have access to hardware
-draw links between the challenges of dealing with oldschool limitations and those of new limited hardware or more broadly relevant programming problems; sometimes history offers the best solution for current problems if folks only looked
-bets involving beer (:
There's a latent market out there, the oldschool seminar the CMUCC guys did at NVScene was packed beyond the legal room capacity and into the corridor. And that was at least partially the links between old and new, not just the nostalgia factor.

A more simple way: To announce early that remote entries are welcome.
If I had known (a few months before the party and not like a week before) that I could remotely present a demo, the oldschool competition would have had one participant more.
But I did realize too late, while I was finishing my stuff for Euskal, and I don't like compofillers.
Maybe next year.

yeah branch is on to something with oldskool (old commercial hardware) vs wild (anything obscure/else) vs high end compo (pc/opengl hardware, that includes mobile) :)
besides, where were all the android demos this year??? android is already passé? :)

W4T? ASM accepts remote submissions? so next year..

Nah perhaps it's just everyone waiting for sponsored Shield Tablets :D
i hope they last longer than sponsored Shields ;)
Now that most videos were uploaded, I found nearly all of them were quite impressive some way or another :)

Las: crashes are not the issue (hey I'm a pro:) ), its more the little glitches or timing issues i worry about. At least if you can check the recording you have a chance to fix things :)
Who cares about a few crashes anyway, doesn't that happen at any party showing live footage.
Hey, we have lots of photos from the amazing Leipzig shadow party -> look, look !
