scene.org awards 2008 - your nominations

category: general [glöplog]
same problem as always though - active people are biased, inactive people are out of touch.

Obviously they can't vote for their own demo or demos that their groups members have helped with. Are active sceners really that biased? I had this idea that great coders respect other great coders, great artists respect other great artists, etc. Am I so wrong?

Actually we wanted Uwe Boll to hand out an award the year he was at Breakpoint, but he never even replied to the question. So much for that..

Keep uwe away. Everything he touches turns to shit.

Question: why on earth would we want our demos judged by people who don't understand the demoscene? There is a point in refreshing the jury (and as far as I know, that happens to some degree every year, exception being "Head of jury" which was the same person for a few years (but that job us basically just administration anyway)).

Speaking as a jury member of previous awards I can say with confidence that the jury members do not vote as an unanimous mass. I easily disagree with at least half of the awards each year, like Pouet does as well, so no real difference there. :)

Oh, and no: the jurors can't vote for their own prods. With regards to bias, I'd say it's more about personal preference really.

The thing is that people just don't imagine the whole time spend talking about the releases, watching them, reading people's ideas, discussing, argumenting...
Its not that we come and say "THIS ONE RULE AND I VOTE FOR IT SO JUST DO IT GUYS LOLZ" and then get a beer during the breakpoint...
Keops, great trolling!
I am definatly for a team of rivals as jury!

I don't think this is communicated very well to the audience. The awards would benefit from more clarity, perhaps more in-depth jury reports (more than just a paragraph per winner), to get across how much effort goes into choosing the winners.

But again, this is an award handed out by a group of people that represents nobody but themselves, so there's really no reason to take it any more serious than it is.

another 10 points goes to hyde.

We have a group of people, who consist of active/very skilled sceners who decides who they want to award. Internally they decide what they like best, and then pronounce it at breakpoint.

Yes, you are allowed to disagree and ignore the whole thing.

But this is often reflected in the other categories aswell. Demos are an artform, which is taste dependent, and I for once, do not care about all the hardwork I see in a production. I also see after other things than probably yourself.

The publics choice is probably the "best" award in my eyes.

You guy are saying crap unless you're saying I'm very skilled :)))))

The awards are represented by different people from different countries all into different topics of the demoscene with different tastes and not searching for the same things in the scene.
knl: no, I put in a "active" for people like you. ;)

as with gloom, i can confirm - in previous years we've all disagreed bitterly. the results of the awards are not usually a consensus, but more like the average of 20 people's wildly varying opinions. sometimes they come out as something nobody is really that happy with. (best soundtrack is a usual source of extreme mudfighting.) but that's democracy for you.

anyway. it's all just a bit of fun, isnt it? :) it's nice to have your work recognised with a nomination or award, it's nice to aim for it if you havent achieved it yet, its nice having a big ceremony with people cheering and drinks afterwards. but its not like anybody died if the results were "wrong". :)

Well actually, we could get molested in case of bitterness..... it's a very dangerous job for us.
smash, that's very diplomatic. It's unfortunate that the deliberations of the jury don't come across very well to the audience, because that whole debate/mudslinging contest sounds interesting.
added on the 2008-12-05 13:24:45 by Claw Claw
i guess it's up to each jury member to rate the techniques behind the artform according to their own free will...

Ok so basically the audience doesn't agree with the jury.

Do all single individuals of this audience agree with each others?
