it takes what it takes to turn an obscure tune to a million dollars (ok maybe just thousands dollars) product. Money buys money, talent alone buys nothing.

News on Timbaland-case:

The district court of Helsinki ruled that Nelly Furtado's Do it -single and albums including it can still be distributed in Finland. Finnish Kernel Records is next planning cases against Geffen-records in other European countries and Usa. They have tried to negotiate with Geffen, but Geffen has disagreed to take part in any negotiations.

Hmm, what this Kernel Records has to do with the case?

Any translantions on that thing?

Kernel Records seems to be a company registered to Turre Legal, which is the law firm pushing the case.
Here's my translation of the Helsingin Sanomat article. I'm not sure on how the legal terms should be translated so I left some more specific ones out, but you get the general idea.

"The Helsinki district court will not ban the distribution of Nelly Furtado's song Do It in Finnish net stores. Finnish Kernel Records demanded the court to prevent the distribution of the song and the albums contaning it, because according to the company it has been plagiarized from a Finnish composer.

According to the decision, the plagiarizing is not so obvious that the distribution could be stopped immediatly. There is a pending trial on the matter, where it will be decided if the work is plagiarized or not.

The lawyer representing Kernel Records, Herkko Hietanen, says he's disappointed in the ruling. He says, that in addition to Finland, there are plans to take the matter into court also in other European countries and in the United States. "

Finnish record company continues plagiarism battle

The Helsinki district court is not prohibiting the distribution of Nelly Furtado's song Do It in Finnish online music stores. The Finnish Kernel Records seeks prevention of distribution of the song and records containing the song from the district court. According to the record company, the song has been plagiarized from the Finnish composer Janne Suni.

According to the lawyer representing Kernel Records, Herkko Hietanen, the court order was to be expected since the matter isn't simple.

The record company is not about to drop the case however but instead is preparing legal proceedings in other European countries and the United States.

Kernel Records has tried to come to terms with Nelly Furtado's record company who have not agreed to negotiations. Nelly Furtado's record label is part of the supranational Universal Music Group.

- We're up against a multinational record company and its producers who have copied materials made by small producers. It's clear that this is one those David versus Goliath settings. Money may eventually have the final say in this case as well, says Hietanen.

Timbaland plays down incident

Tempest a.k.a. Janne Suni composed a song called Acid Jazzed Evening for the demo event Assembly in 2000.

The similarities between Suni's song and Do It, later assembled by the known American producer Timbaland, aroused widespread discussion on the Internet's open news sites and among others, YouTube.

The matter is complicated by the fact that Timbaland didn't utilize Suni's original but a Commodore 64 version made by the Norwegian Glenn Rune Gallefoss. Timbaland would be obliged to thank both Suni and Gallefoss.

Similar activity classified as plagiarism or even theft is pretty common but the cases rarely are self-evident. In an interview done by a Washington based radio station Timbaland a.k.a. Timothy Moss has downplayed the incident and spoken for sampling and the utilization of other people's songs.

<wild-speculation-based-on-no-legal-grounding-whatsoever>
Tempest has sold/licenced the rights to AJE to Kernel Records - who may actually be not much more than a shell company set up by the law firm - which allows them to litigate the case by themselves without having to drag Tempest (or GRG? Maybe this serves as a way to combine the two cases too) into court personally. Result: Tempest gets the whole thing out of his hair (hence his statement that "My case ... has come to its closure") while the case itself continues.

Sounds like a very sensible idea to me, if so.
