So, let's fucking do this instead of talking how to implement YT, I've started a list of things we might have to clear out before code is being written. It might also help if we gather some people who have time, and have a little meeting[0] just to make sure we don't do unnecessary work.

[0] Jupp, they suck - but here it might help to coordinate, or synchronize beer drinking.

That's exactly where a little upfront thinking can help.

Especially the cleaning part is IMHO where contact to the running application with all the real data must not be lost to ensure that at least the core stuff is still working (so one doesn't end up with a broken application and realizes that in the very moment the live system has been migrated and no rollback is possible).

Also, while the opportunity seems great to ditch the current programming language, database system and whatnot, one must not forget that there is a system in place since years that (both users and) the people(?) who run it have lots of experience with.

When it comes to dropping PHP or MySQL, I'm usually in the first row throwing rocks at those, but if there's one volunteer with a background in Perl/Python/Ruby/OCaml/Go/Dart/mIRCscript each, that's a fragile foundation for a technology switch.

While I value your enthusiasm, mog, dumping the code in the wild and having it forked might not work towards what we're looking for here, but instead branching-off manpower.

I'm not encouraging using a different language, but the people who have time might feel more confident with something else. It's for discussion.

I agree on keeping the data, but I bet we have have some bright minds here who don't have a problem with moving rows around to have a more sane structure[0].

For branching, that's the reason why we should aim for having the same
features first, a nice somewhat clean base to work from, that supports UTF-8 at least. I know people always want new features, but it doesn't help to stack poop on even more poop just to have embedded YT videos - which could also be easily implemented through a plug-in btw.

I think we agree on all points Y0Gi, but instead of talking about doing something (thread dies, dug up in a couple of years) - we should just start - either way, errors will be made. Though, I really want Gargajs go on this.

[0] None of us has seen the code, but it's a system that grew - so I expect dirty hacks to get it working before falling asleep.

for windows demos it would be good to be able to have a list of necessary .dll files for running the demo, and which version of windows it actually runs on.

heck, there's demos i've participated in that i don't know how to run anymore...

Guess tags would take care of that

Proper nfo files should take care of that. Listing dependencies for each prod is utter madness.

so, this is not the "new feature suggestion pond" but more the "we want to help cloud"
also with a slight hint of "do it like this, but without me"?

tomaes, being able to list dependencies for prods will help people to run stuff on real hardware in future. regarding realtime aspect of demos this is much more important than if youtube is one or two clicks away.

nosfe, People, who are inclined to watch 20 year old demos in real-time, usually also have the know-how to do so. The rest will watch the video. My general point is that features that are usability and/or maintainability nightmares should be on the very bottom of a todo list.

(A reasonable way to handle this would be to split comments into categories (general comment/goof/trivia/requirements), similar to what you can see on csdb)

But yeah, let gargaj and the demozoo folks do their thing first. All the commonly discussed features and opinions about them are on the table already. :)

One thing this new Pouet could do would be to scale down large pictures to window length. Just hate it when large pics break the text flow.

And I of course meant the BBS threads of new Pouet :)

More like: "I want this, and that, and this one over there - and somebody to do the slavery". So it's just the usual software cycle, almost got me worried that the demoscene would be different from that - phew!

i saw some post about being able to retrieve data directly from the database from external sites. is there an api for that? or are we talking about the xnfo api?

There's an account setting to display images as links. I just checked that while wondering why I don't see any images in the bbs *at all* any more. Guess I turned them off in CSS at some point (pouet bbs images + work computer is a bad combo...).
