I have to agree with you about C64 coding :). On PC, sometimes I make a theory about how an optimization I've just thought might work out, I make my code a mess with that and find out it makes my algorithm slower for unknown reasons ;P. Later I find out and try something else but it doesn't seem to give any speed boost. Then I make a new theory of what went wrong and maybe I learn how to work in these cases. I have such problems with C and recently trying to cache optimize some code in GP32/2X that didn't worked or worked slower. Of course with C64/8bits/asm it's entierly diferrent. There, you won't get the true power of it by writting a regular algorithm and trying to optimize it's assembly bits. You start meditating on the problem and think of some crazy unrolled code with weird data structures that fits best in the specific algorithm hardwired to the specific code. There, I try to think the optimal assembly code on the specific effect before starting writting anything. But of course, when I want to make a new effect never done before, I first open a compiler and try to make the algorithm work and understand how it works, and later I meditate for hours on the optimal assembly sollution to port on CPC or any other 8bit. Make my brain dizzy, w00t!!! It's cool when it works.. but annoying when those GP optims I try now won't work the shit of it and I have spent hours without a result :(
