Crysis dx10 on windows xp?!

category: general [glöplog]
F-T-L : STALKER is indeed an excellent diehard PC game, an innovative open FPS/RPG hybrid with a deep immersive world. First hours are oppressive, you have to use the single shot mode to spare bullets and survive :>

too bad the retail version was ridden with a bunch of gameplay bugs, many side quests are totally un-rewarding, and the promises previously made by the devs haven't been kept (no vehicle in the final version, several small maps instead of a unique Zone, etc...). Though i still prefer a not perfect original ambitious fun game than yet another classic fps clone as slick as the last call of duty.

Boiling Point by the russian Deep Shadows was also very original, but badly reviewed because of its legendary bugs. Its ambiance is still unrivalled, can't wait for White Gold :p

What do you guys think of the Gears of War PC engine ?

I agree Zest. Initial retail had some problems with some quests and most importantly, annoying quicksave crashes. But since 1.003 i had no trouble at all. But again, there were some problems.

Boiling Point was also excellent. But probably targeted for even smaller audience that Stalker. But i didn't find a way to run it in x64 Ultimate :(

It's true. Many games have this add hype all 'round them and then nothing playable comes out of it. I just like those "silent" releases, that kick ass every EA-like nonsense. AND's Kreed wasn't that bad either :)

86,000 copies sold in the USA so far (which is supposed to be the biggest mark), that's quite disappointing, especially compared to Halo3's 3 million copies.

nezbie: that's good news but just bear in mind that these figures include the bundle sales.

a funny 'review' for those who have actually played the game til the end (spoiler alert!)
added on the 2008-03-06 12:57:45 by Zest Zest
teh heh Zest thats pretty funny. Well it's shortcommings aside, i still find it to be one of the better shooters out there, and thats the story i get from most people who played and still play it. I still think the whole dx9,5 thing sucks fucknuts and is a rotten move on cryteks part, but oh well...capitalism, right?

But now that were on games i just saw the minimum specs for assasins creed. WHAT? ever heard of opimising code UBI? how the fuck can a game out on 1Q 08 have an E6750 as a minimum cpu requirement? Makes me think that the game specs are written by the hardware manufactureres business organisation, otherwise there are some coders somewhere who should be ashamed of themself....I dont care if its the best game to hit the shelves since rubics cube, those specs are taking the piss quite frankly.

I found a system that can run Assasins creed "low settings" and low res:

specially build for assasins creed and crysis

...no really!!! UBI is full of it! There is NOTHING going on in that game that demands for such processing power, the only reasonable explanation is LAZY conversion, or plain ol' pisspoor code. TAke a pick, the above requirements speaks for themself. But i take it that its just the last trick in the anti piracy bag. Make a game that nobody can actually play. i thought crytek was pushing it, but UBI takes the cake! The cake is a lie!

Take it easy. Seriously. Just don't play the game :)

no thats not going to cut it, i dont really care about the game its not my style. Several people here work with games, and its about time they take their head out of Nvidias and intels arse and focus a little less on the narrow segment of "first adapters".

Ubi sloth is raising the hardware requirement bar for no fucking reason, and it doesnt take much activity in the cranium to figure that it only takes a couple of succesful examples within the industry to set presedence (crysis, assasin), and thats what im pissed off about.

If pc gaming has its problems with falling sales figures, i doubt piracy is the larger sinner when youre out looking for explanations. Just look above, nobody wants to upgrade every 4 months just to be able to play at MINIMUM requirements, unless they grow money in the back yard.

I make games by profession. We make games for people who buy games. On the PC side, people with high-class computers buy games. Some games will even make some people buy new computers just to play them, which is silly waste of money in my eyes but I say let everyone live. Nobody is forcing you to play games, and especially not those exact games that do not work on your rig. Just go buy a casual game, the Net is full of good and inventive indie developers who make games that run on older hardware. Or then learn coding and make better games yourself.

It's always been like that, even in the demoscene. People with inferior hardware whine about the good old days while the rest just go happy. At some point, even the whiners finally upgrade.

No, but setting the example of "lazy is ok, they have fast pc's anyway", sucks, and that is quite obviously what is going on.

I know quite a few people who moved to consoles because of it and others who then chose to upgrade the hardware and sod the game makers. Im making fair money, so im in the luxury position that i can both upgrade AND buy games, but more and more things are making me reconcider the deals, be they high requirements for no reason, aggresive protections that pirates removes anyway or telling paying costumers with a problem or suggestion "then just dont use our product". that will land you cosumters im sure, i think they teach that particular line as the first thing when you go to a business schoo in factl. Shun the payin costumers and/or belittle their concerns and youll be all fine.

Try some indie games. I've been having a blast with Sins of a Solar Empire, and it even runs decently on my old fixed-pipeline laptop. It's even been near the top of the charts for the past few weeks. Before that, I was playing Galactic Civilizations II (Yes, I love 4x games), and Neverwinter Nights even before (it's an old game, but the wealth of online mods seriously extend the longevity. You'd be surprised at the quality of stuff out there).

So yes, you can even have your gaming fix on old crummy PCs ;-)

people complaining of hardware requirements are probably not motivated enough to buy the game, just pirate it?

i'm not in the game business but this assertion doesn't seem true, i would rather say that many 'hardcore' players do pirate a lot, and on the other hand look at the success of games sold on steam : most run on average machines, they target hardcore and casual gamers (Team Fortress 2 targets both!), and some are AAA titles.

games have always led the technical evolution of PC, the whole PC industry/market need big tech demos like Crysis (half j/k :p), but like highend demos people always complain about the high-end requirements and 'forced' upgrades, that's a usual and logical fact, and totally understandable.

about piracy i'm still thinking that publishers should come back from the ugly and empty standard dvd boxes, either with download platforms like steam, or with well-crafted collector editions like for example Frontlines one :

I hope its obvious that im pissed of about how fast the upgrades are forced atm. and there a no single part to blame, the hardware manufacturers are equally guilty. It whould be obvious that you dont buy the newest flashy game to play it at mid setting on the high end machine you bought 3 months ago?

The more horsepower the programmers get, the more lazy they become apparently. Just like the rest of us, the better a car the less we walk, but stop it dammit! :D

iblis: this phenomenon is not new and won't change, as the whole PC business need such locomotives.

as preacher said, just choose your games appropriately according to your own gears, and if you really want to play the ubergames then don't be that surprised that you are forced to uprgade, that's PC life cycle.
