Probably because part of the massive egotrip of having a kid is seeing traces of your genes in the child. Once the kid has grown up, moved out and distanced from the parents, the only link is the parents part of the dna and perhaps the last name.

Indeed, to me it is the ultimate assault to reproduce and assume that the offspring will enjoy spending 18 years in the company of the parents, and a lifetime in this world.

dnes: i would say it's probably about equal. difference is with a dog you can train them not to shit all over themselves a LOT quicker. I mean, for how long do children shit their pants, 1 - 2 years? I trained my 2 month old puppy in less than 4-5 weeks.
