Germans (in general, give or take the odd exception) have a tendency to go beserk with politically correct rage when you touch on the Nazis and anything that reminds them of it. While I can sympathize with the fact that nobody would like to be reminded of these series of events, it gets to the point where it's ridculous.

Essentially any reference, tongue-in-cheek remark or sick joke gets taken as nation-wide offense. I've seen jesusfreaks act less heated about a JESUS IS A HOMO shirt. Your stance that you ought have a laugh regardless of that (and yes, The Great Dictator is a nice example) is not popular German thinking.

While I'm ranting, I might as well touch briefly on this german ban on public display of symbols and materials related to Nazis: imho, it's overzealous and it doesn't work. Burying those things just made the people who dig that Nazi crap pick up some other flag, symbol and dresscode.

You're not making their ideas disappear by banning public display. It's not symbols you should be trying to expel, it's the people and the fucked up ideas in their head you ought to be after.

I'm afraid these ideas (diluted or not) have found their way into a lot of minds, already.

I regard political correctness, or for example the rather amusing habit to systematically go to court in order to crush any forms of contestations by financial means (like suing okkie for blatant & outrageous slandering).
as reminiscences of some old & wellknown totalitarisms tools adapted & softened for our so-called democracies.

Whether intended or not, nazism or stalinism or maoism (or whatever) have been reservoirs/schools for our modern democracies, we're picking here the ways to silence the contestating & unhappy minorities
often punished severely in order to keep the fighting majority as obedient & enthrusting as possible.

To keep the majority of our fellow citizens in line and to avoid a general demoralization are also two of the reasons why our governments are financially helping the lower classes (also because we all know how nazism raised)

but just for clarification:
i am german, did not lose/win any world war or kill any jews - nor did i harm any other human being in the history of mankind. i feel as much responsible for these events, as i do for causing the most recent gulf war.
assuming i/we/my countrymen was/were cocky - it's definately because of anything, but not because of what you refer to.

Its hard to talk about a nation without generalizing. Iam sure there where one or two people in germany that wasnt nazis, however, its very unlikely they lived to tell the tale, so we can most likely assume that everyone who lives on today wich are real germans are indeed from a tree of nazis.

No, YOU don't understand, or you just don't want to. I am aware of this ban, and as stated, I think it's not only stupid but also very, very self-indulgent.
