What does Demosceners thinking about NFT?

For such amounts of money I'd rather contact an artist directly and commission a piece for myself with the artist signing off their rights to me. Not only would this be cheaper and better for the environment but I'd also really have something worth in return be it copyright, exclusive use or what-else is decided in the contract.
yeah, really good point. underlines the fact that NFTs really are just a gambling and money laundering scheme and it's not about the art at all
Curiously, not knowing about this thread, I thought about Scene vs. NFT this morning.
Essentially the demoscene is the original "NFT", since it has been producing digitally available and distributed art from the very start.
Difference: it's not paid for with any currency other than conviction and enthusiasm.
Scene productions going "NFT" would be shaite.
And yes, most of it is front running and money/data mining scams.

One would expect Christies to be an authority on authencity/original art. An upscaling is just like a poster in this case. If they are going to call it original it could have included an Amiga 1000 with the monitor and equipment used to display that image at the time it was published. And then.. maybe it would have to be that exact amiga he made it on aswell? not just any amiga, but the one that contains chicken and melon fat layered upon the surface of the left mouse key as he hammered in the pixels one by one like a boss. If that was indeed his meal that day.

IIRC from the docu he didn't pixel but colored a digitized image of Debbie Harry, much like he did with Marilyn Monroe but sans screen printing. Perhaps there was some pixeling too that I don't know about.
That's so weird. What happens if someone takes someone else's work and sells it as NFT? What if one recompiled Second Reality from sources, altered few scenes a bit, and sold it as a rare altered version. How does it even work legally? Or maybe one should shrug it and be like, everyone can watch SR for free, one more idiot just paid money for nothing, who cares?
Yet I am not much in crypto, never made sense to me, but I am neither angry about it. If someone can do things like these it's in their choice.

It's almost as if the system explicitly designed to have no regulatory oversight has problems with having no regulatory oversight.
when i see things like that im lookin forward to someone reverse Leonard Eulers inequality. ooopsie
I was into crypto a lot a few years back, I have since realized the problems with it.
@Optimus literally that has already happened many times. Not literally Second Reality, but many artists have already found others making "fake" NFTs in their name and selling them without their consent (or knowledge for that matter).
NFTs are completely tangential to copyright, licenses and what not. I.e. when you own an NFT you in fact own nothing really. It's not even a work itself embedded into blockchain as a blob. It's usually just an URL string, and most commonly to some AWS storage thing owned by who knows whom.
The best explanation of NFTs I've seen is this:

I only don't get the exaggeration with the global warming thing. Crypto is just one small part of the world, I don't think it alone does so much damage. I bet there are things that do much more damage in the environment right now. If it was only so easy to destroy planet earth with a weird hobby. I know there are articles there connecting global warming and crypto like it's the devil, but I know there are also people who are obsessed with global warming and people who absolutely hate crypto or libertarians. I know I am just neutral in all these terms, neither hate them nor like them.
@Optimus IIRC the argument goes that all that crypto bullshit has essentially eaten all the progress that has been made on renewable energy. I haven't followed this narrative closely enough to comment on it with confidence though.
Optimus: that's a lot of logical fallacy right there.
@Optimus: According to Camebridge university data bitcoin cosumes like 0.6 % of the electricity usage worldwide for now and rising...which I find a quite utter waste... linky ...of course you can become philosophical what to ban or not...but "creating" money with no work except setting up computers and let them create useless data by wasting resources is just an insult to evolution itself for the benefit of the ones who can benefit...but for sure the greed will never end and of course mankind has many similar issues to be addressed...
all the devices that are on standby while Americans are snoring in their bed consume more than the entire bitcoin energy consumption, so, 'waste' is relative. at least you can still buy the Mona Lisa with bitcoins, unlike wasted heat / electrons drippage from the iPhone charger or 62" Samsung TV you're too lazy to pull out the socket... at least you directly contribute to global warming with that :P
Mining crypto"currencies" basically automates the process of making the rich even richer, while producing nothing at all, polluting the planet on the way and driving everything to shit. Hooray.

Do you have a source for this?
Why are we making demos? Why are we making art? Isn't that a waste of resources? I remember I was talking in a bar with another software engineering who was aware of the demoscene but couldn't understand it. "Why not waste your energy into building open source software that might be useful? I can't get the gist of this demoscene thing you are into it. So many hours wasted while you could be building software that helps the world.". There are so many other activities we are doing and others find useless. We could be not wasting the energy or putting it into better uses too. I do agree that crypto in a lot of ways is even more pointless than art and most a way for some people to make money without producing nothing, but something in me says "if they want to do it, they can do it". Would you for example support a policy that bans cryptocurrency? I am not sure I would. And I still think a lot of people politically are hating crypto. Even climate change discussion is so political, I just cringe every time I see it and just don't want to have anything to do with it.

this is the very foundation of Finance (buying / selling stocks from private holders, with no money going to the actual original businesses). Oh, that's what rules the world too ;)basically automates the process of making the rich even richer, while producing nothing at all
True, but there's this whole narrative around crypto and NFTs about decentralization and democratization and putting power back into the people's hands, when in fact it's just more of the tired old same.
@kb_ true, if anything (especially about money) was really democratic, it would not be allowed
Rob: cannot Google yourself? that's like wasting my energy for your own benefit.. might as well start cryptomining if that's your thing! ;)
@Optimus: Anyway I wish there would be a referendum about it with some neutral information about it beforehand, which won't happen, both...it's just an extreme way of waste to me...but yeah, while demomaking is a niche, you could ask why is mankind playing and developing computer games and how much does that consume ? The 90's demoscene answer would be Gamers are Lamers and all banned from the hall by the party rules ;-)

It's not true.
I figured as much. Doesn't stop him from repeating this same bullshit argument over and over.
Yeah, that's how it works, random regurgitating of 'facts' and telling you to find sources yourself cause 'hurf durf do your own research'.
If you chuck out facts like that, back them up with sources imo.
