Should demoscene be explicit or P.C.?

groepaz: I chose that incident because it was public. In my years as party organizer there was other stuff going on, also in pretty recent times, but most of it was handled between the people concerned. No need to drag anyone or anything out into the open.

In the end I don't even disagree with you; the demoscene is a pretty friendly place for most people, esp compared to the "world out there". It's just not all unicorns and rainbows.

of course it is not - and i would'nt want it to be either. how boring would that be :)

(still eg collecting random links in a random irc channel for a day or two shows me more racist/sexist/borderline violent shit than i have ever seen in 30 years on demoparties)

Preacher: interesting, but it's OT. Please read the beginning of the thread to find out why.

Also to sum up my point (especially for Gargaj, so he sure understands I have one):
IMHO
explicit content and freedom of expression should be ok, as long as it is not juvenile/immature/distasteful/insulting/misogynistic garbage.

Does "content" and "non garbage" also apply to Pouet comments?

Fuck no !

noname: so yeah, speaking of comments, I actually don't like the fact Preacher brings back some crap from 2002.
Luckily, I wasn't part of it, but IMHO you guys should chill the f-out and move on.
It was bad, very bad, super shameful, no need to deny, but AFAIK this doesn't happen anymore, so why really torturing yourself?
There will be still one or two troglodytes, but who cares.
Meanwhile, I'm all for creating respected art without PG-13 limitations.

Why not?

Just because it's not visible to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Everyday racism or misogyny aren't really visible to me, because I happen to be a white man, but I have no reason to discount the experiences of friends and acquaintances who are either women or belong to minority groups. I know several females who have been treated pretty badly or felt uncomfortable (for a reason) at demoparties. I just happened to remember that thread, an example of the kind of stuff that also happens in public.

Preacher: ok, if you say this racism/misogyny still happens on demoscene parties, I stand corrected. I was too optimistic then ;)

Tomkh: In the context of the discussion here, your comments on our last train to danzig demo, and the french election yesterday, I recommend to you "Le Mensch" (Entschuldigung if you don't understand).

"juvenile/immature/distasteful" basically equals "simple minded but harmless" to me. What´s wrong with harmless stuff?

And who is it up to decide what is insulting or misogynistic, yet talking about garbage or not? Some examples already mentioned here tell that there is no consensus in any criteria mentioned.

My wife, alongside myself, has attended Revision from 2013-2016; I don't think she ever experienced any problems regarding sexism or misogyny. Certainly she has never said in recent times. Back at Revison 2013, there were some comments over some audio stuff that some sceners were listening to that was in German language but (as she understands and can speak a bit of German herself) she was of the impression that what was being played was offensive but that may be just her own personal view.

The fact that * most * sceners (male and female) are largely white Europeans probably helps those of us a lot, although I do personally find it distressing when people of other origins are affected by racism in particular. This, I stress, has * never * happened at any demoparties, it is more with stuff outside, in the "real" world.

Mind you though, within the larger demoparties in general, quite a lot of the behaviour and releases that were maybe considered to be slightly sexist have tended not to occur at events such as Revison. Mind you, wind the clock back to Mekka Symposium 2002 and the "release" from Crimson Jihad, in a way wishing that Bill Gates and others had been in the World Trade Centre in New York when the planes hit, that was despicable. No wonder at the time, sceners within the main hall were quite literally screaming at the orgas of that party to stop the entry ..... Yep, it was disqualified shortly afterwards, but even so, some damage had been done ....

noname: I don't know how is that relevant in the context on my comments that were merely about the name. You seem to read too much in-between the lines. I didn't like the name from aesthetical purposes only. Later, I actually gave you a thumb up, as this is really nice prod nonetheless. But, I see you still feel angry about this :(
Oh well... you will never let it go I guess.
As for the book "Le Mensch", definitely looks interesting. Thanks for the hint, I will take a look.

T$: yeah, that's why I was bring up "modern theatre" argument.
IMHO both are fine, especially that in the second mostly women are actors. Personally, I don't like either of them artistically, but I respect the artist right to make a statement.

indeed. when bitbreaker and me like silly penis jokes and you do not - wtf is the problem? i don't like a bunch of things shown in compos either. and some of the music compos are outright insulting and the gif nonsense physically hurts me. so what. move on.

groepaz, T$: feel free to ignore "immature/distasteful" in my list ;) Go for it!

not sure what you are trying to say, i sure didnt ignore anything in your list. i still find it harmless. it boils down to matter of taste, no more no less.

groepaz: I don't really want to go into argument which art is more valuable. In short: something that is trivial and unimaginative in nature has less value to me. But yeah, maybe I'm in fact ignorant when it comes to "immature jokes", while you are true connoisseur of the genre. Then yeah, go for it.

you shouldve stopped there... ~15 posts ago :)
seems to me that everybody in this thread either agrees with one another, or is ranting against extremist views that nobody here actually holds.
