ASSEMBLY 2009
category: general [glöplog]
The guys from Pyrotech didn't expect to win last year, but they did as everybody else was busy getting their prods to NVision. They were pretty flabbergasted to pick up the first prize.
Nosfe, yeah, we are slaves to the mainstream and baby seal killers of innovation. ;-)
The oldskool year limit is set for this year. I do agree that it is about time to move the limit, so let's see about that next year.

in case it wasn't clear, my quote was from Truck's ridiculous drivel about Pyrotech winning assembly with a "formulaic crapheap", as if every assembly demo must get the high seal of quality first.
Pyrotech won fair and square.

it was one of the best demos in the compo, no wonder it won :)
truck can go and make a (better) demo about it. There, i've said it! :)

For this year I really except to see the yearly prod from division

And finally question for demogroups: are you making demo/intro contribution to the assembly this year? I certainly hope not to see as poor quality as we saw in the BP demo compo repeated.
Evoflash is coming back again this year with another flash prod, hopefully we'll catch up few years again with our platform (first it was 90s, then mid-90s, then late-90s)
Statikbuzz, hope you'll reach the 2010 soon with your platform ;).
Hopefully there this year again!

I'm thinking about sleeping arrangements outside the party hall at Assembly (I'm planning to go for the first time this year). Has anyone tried staying at the Rastila campsite, or is that a totally crazy idea? (It's a fair distance from the Hartwall Areena, but seems to be on a metro line). Seems like it'd be a lot cheaper than a hotel.
I dunno if they're even likely to have space at that time of year...

sounds like a braindead idea to go to rastila, it's really far away and traveling would take ages.
if you have a tent just put that to some random spot of forest in the central park. :)

Yeah, Rastila is far away though you can get there pretty easily with the Helsinki metro. Personally, I don't think that it's that bad an idea, because four days of Assembly is a fucking long time and getting away from it and seeing the city a bit is at least for me only refreshing. The sleeping arrangements at the partyplace are notoriously bad and should be avoided at all costs, unless you like clueless security guys kicking the soles of your feet for sleeping in a place that was just shown to you by an another security guy.
Also, some people manage to sleep on the rocks..

well, metro doesn't go after 23, so getting to rastila during night time is a pain in the ass. at least you would be missing some important compos.
unless you're fine with going there to sleep in the morning...

i screamed obscenities at some security guard last year due to the sleeping "arrangements" and excessive tiredness. so yeah, sleep somewhere (anywhere) else :)
Oh, I wondered how late the metro might run. I guess that idea's out then! Thanks for the replies.

The first batch of seminars is up. A couple of picks you might like:
The tech behind the Love MMO
http://www.assembly.org/summer09/seminars/sessions#lovetech
This is a procedural MMO, and Eskil will talk about how the tools are made. Definite match to demomaking tools.
Blueberry Garden exposed
http://www.assembly.org/summer09/seminars/sessions#blueberrygardens
Independent Games Festival Grand Prix winner this year. Different, ecletic and artistic. Definitely something there to apply to demos.
Symphonic shades & videogame music
http://www.assembly.org/summer09/seminars/sessions#symphonicshades
Purple Motion on conducting videogame music with symphonic orchestras. Cool stuff.
All seminars at http://www.assembly.org/summer09/seminars
More good stuff coming and will be announced shortly. CU at ASM!

This one can be cool with the right amount of drunk sceners.
eskill steenberg's stuff reminds me of 90s swedish demos. And his tools and approach are very demoscenish. Should fit assembly pretty well.
Gravis Ultrasounds is now accepted in Oldskool demo:
