Music Disks are IMHO better suited for smaller parties - while you typically reach a larger audience by releasing at Revision

This idea I like!!

I've never seen a musicdisk get shown for more than ~3 minutes in a compo.

What's suited for smaller parties is people who want to get an easy ranking.

You obviously haven't watched the Wild compo at Revision then :)

Rules for musicdisks were already changed back in 2020:

Quote:
Musicdisks will no longer get to play every tune at full length. A musicdisk will get a few minutes of playtime to show the interface and visitors can later download the entry and listen to the tracks on their own.

("every tune at full length" is possibly overstating it... I don't think we ever did that :-) )

Just checked the recording of the Revision 2024 Wild compo, the first musicdisk (entry #2) got played for almost 6 minutes, which is quite a lot more than "~3 minutes"

Placed 3rd with a musicdisk in 2014, which, if Scenesat is to believed, was played for ~3-4 minutes or so, and the first minute of that was the cracktro + faux-adventure-game - so don't worry, I'm familiar with how it is.

My point is that I start to really fucking bristle when we're enthusiastically coming up with solutions looking for a problem, especially when the solutions involve "yeah fuck those people".

Oh wow, a musicdisk was played for 3mins over 10 years ago, so that must still hold true today (it's not, just check the Revision Wild compo recordings)

The real musicdisk compo is played outside on the POO-BRAIN-BOOMBLASTER

My point is that even 6 minutes is fine.

And my point is that you havenmt watched the compos if you've never seen a musicdisk played for over 3mins ;)

srsly, what's with the hostility towards music disk releases? those are a respectable form of release imo. Also specifically at Revision, you'll manage to find something else to do while they play if you're really that annoyed by original scene music (food trucks, fireplace, substances, or _writing a prod yourself instead of complaining about other people's prods receiving too much playback time_, ...).

me personally, I'd rather see DJ sets cancelled/moved to abfahrt hours than compos cut/preselected or scheduled at 1e99 o'Clock. It's fucking awesome if there's a shitload of releases. I can go to a rave every other day in real life if necessary. Stacked compos however are rare, so let's celebrate it.

the scene is so dead that we need to complain about compos that are too many and too long because of the sheer amount of releases

Hmm, maybe I should release a demo with a 1h-long scrolltext. ;o)

you're confusing Revision with X

So, to maybe reduce the running time of the Revision Wild Compo by either categorically or more strictly preselecting music disk releases brings up considerations and opinions:

Quote:
no but for real, i don't want to say "no more musicdisks", but having several of them in the wild compo is tedious

Quote:
Musicdisks are great, but maybe not that exciting in the wild compo.

Quote:
Music Disks are IMHO better suited for smaller parties - while you typically reach a larger audience by releasing at Revision, the very same audience is more likely to have forgotten after the end of the compo due to the large number of compo entries per compo block...

IMHO it is uncalled for to talk of
Quote:
hostility
here.

Also, there is no intention to
Quote:
involve "yeah fuck those people".

but uh, was the wild compo the actual problem though? or are we 'catching flies' to use a nice Dutchism here. I mostly remember a lot of PC demos last two years, of which about half were very meh... often with too long running times too. i don't mean that disrespectful but hey, there's voting involved so we're meant to judge, right. so preselection can at least fix THAT.

The ideas that came up aimed at making the Sunday night more accessible/endurable. To POSSIBLY not have the final compo block start at midnight and end at 4 am. Maybe save 10 minutes here, maybe 15 minutes there... maybe move the main DJ Set to the end... things that had already been mentioned, and nothing to "really fucking bristle" about. Reducing the showing time of music disks during the Wild Compo (or even not showing them at all) is just one idea.

And that would be one point the organizers would make: yes, the PC demo compo features meh-stuff, but much of it is by newcomers, firstie prods, shown and presented to honour their effort. A music disk will most probably not be a firstie...

... and then there is the Färjan entries...

music disks are wild compo, not the pc demo compo. and yes, i favour that 'let the new kids play with the big boys' attitude concerning firsties at big parties, but... mediocrity in numbers is the problem.

Those two compos were brought up to point out possibilites to save time, and some ppl would rather have less music disks (or none at all) in the Wild Compo than less new kids firsties, for sure. Save time in the Wild by reducing showing time of music disks, save time in the PC compo by reducing e.g. Färjan stuff; respect the fact that ppl have GROWN BEYOND 50, need to sleep earlier and so forth.

again, wild is not the problem. those compos are 8+ hours apart

Coming up: Music disk presentation in full length. Go grab a beer, or take a trip to the toilet - remember old farts have weak bladders, too.
