The chiptune scene from your day hasn't changed, it has died. The current "8-bit music" communities are mostly inspired by old video games, not evolved from the demoscene. That's why there are so many NES/Gameboy tunes, and I'm guessing that your fame in a different community 20 years ago makes you more of an alien than a respected elder. Maybe that's why you're feeling the album has something un-hip about it? The great nostalgic C64/Amiga style makes it out of touch with what the current communities are doing, but whether that matters or not depends on what you want with your music. I'd say keep developing your own style, experiment with combining the chip sound with violin and anything else you like, and don't mind the communities. The result will be more interesting than pleasing the crowd with yet another boring Nintendo tune. :)

*grin* - glad you're all enjoying it so much peeps.
I'm going to of course simply continue doing what 'I' do, but try and develop new ideas and techniques on the way. Like how the new Melon-Glo-Mania sounds, compared to the old one etc. etc. I have to keep myself interested, and get enjoyment out of it - if anyone else does, then great. That was the whole point of the album in the first place, I did it for me... but I think the egotistical part of me was hoping it may have been a more prominent release within the chiptune community
I see what you're saying wysiwtf, that's such as shame really. Makes a lot of sense... you know what, I quite like the idea of being an alien, hehe!! :)

i think you meant absence? =)
Absence hits the nail on the head.
Doing your own stuff regardless of it being hip or un-hip -> bonus points by default
