Would bad poetry count as an oldschool demoeffect by now? thinking of all thoose demos around 99-01.

precalculated image distortion - used multiple times in Second Reality, for example in the sword reflection or the cloud text scrolling

360 panorama video loop - used in TBL amiga demos like starstruck, in the "bug" walking on the factory for example
It's funny with those effect names, because you have for example tech-tech which is a different name for sine distorting (but only on X) a big image, DYCP/PP/SomethingP/etc which are different kinds of sine scrollers and we basically have the same thing. But for the history it would be interesting to see when some effects were discovered at each different machine and what names they give to them.

But the Snurkel. Haha! So many years I am watching demos and I kept wondering, what the fuck is a Snurkel scroller? Hahaha!!! Such a funny name..
Snurkel. Snurkle. Snurkel. Haha

To the "Voxel-scape/tunnel/sphere" add also "Voxel-torus" (See Live Evil/Mandula), also voxel on polygon surfaces (Robotnik I think).

I still don't get the hypnoglow? Is it a special kind of glow that makes you sleepy?

Voxel-twistcylinders (like in Despair/Iguana, Gateways/Trauma and many others)

multi-scroller
Snurkle, I think it's the scroll with font that move on a curve and rotate, like the reset part of the cuddly demos
ok, so how is hypnoglow oldschool ?

hypnoglow is, as i understand it, zoomblur :)
and zoomblur is a cheap interpretation of radial (zoom)blur
Dna scroller
Duh.. you lamers. Glenz?

And hypnoglow is not oldschool.

ruderudy>cool idea, good luck with this project!

ruderudy: Fair enough, splendid idea - though I still think effects need some room to breath - otherwise you just show off another demoscene effect, strobo :)

Thanks in advance for the massive effort!

A very useful topic for me, don't let it sink. The Freax jargon dictionary is already 55 pages long but I feel it still misses some keywords. Perhaps it'd be useful to open another topic for newschool effects.

hypnoglow is best done using a zoomblur with kawase taps and good blitback kernel

Blenk? (just light-sourced filled vectors but with a custom sqrt+custom angle-to-colorspace curve.)

Someone say chessboard/chessplane yet?

Starfields? Vectorbobs/balls?

Coppershade. Copperbar.

OK and now please explain these:

- Ribbons / twisters
- Alcatraz
- Snurkel scroller
- Circular starfield (supposedly a vortex, like in Second Reality or Desert Dream?)
- Metatunnel
- Metacube (blobs made of boxes?)
- Plane warp
- IFS
- Wolfram
- Fluffy
- Boids

I might well know most of these but never heard mentioning them on these names (or they escaped my memory vault in the recent twenty years).
