Future demo festivals: kill the "original release" rule
category: general [glöplog]
Navis: but I'd like to see the demo that wins an entire year.
Isn't that what the scene.org awards are for?
You know what scares off newbies the most? Lack of reward, lack of public recognition.
dominator: how is the demoscene ahead of what you can see at the cinema right now?
L.Ritter: why would you like to do that? Does the whole thing need to be super-competitive like, for example, football (league / champions league etc.)?
The 'big guys' always come top at parties anyway so what difference does it make? The only time other groups get a look in is when the big guys dont release or it's something lazy, that's how it's always been.
Personally I don't see the harm, if your demo comes 8th at one, why not try putting it in another? Vast majority of parties are only attended by sceners anyway so it's not like they're not gonna know it's an "old" demo.

Go make a demo about it people
In that cause I don't understand you initial argument. Who is it you want to reward?
Creators of demos or the audience?
Above, you claim that audiences at lesser parties are disappointed because of the lack of high quality productions. You propose to fix this by allowing to submit demos to more than one competition. On the other hand, exactly this would scare off newbies, because it would raise the level of competition even at smaller parties.
You also seem to imply that the general level of incentives is too low and that would also be fixed by allowing resubmissions. I believe this has already been taken care of by the creation of the scene.org awards as a "grand prize".
Maybe a solution could be to have more awards or competitions that are not linked to a specific party?
Leonard (gosh, that sounds incredibly formal doesn't it): I'd like to know what sort of 'exposure' you think demoparties can give to productions like Masagin, beyond what they get already...? Two years on, Masagin is still regularly shown at parties (as it was at BP), and there must be very, very few sceners who aren't aware of it. In the small world of the demoscene, you're an A-list celebrity.
If you're talking about exposure *outside* the demoscene, then fair enough - but that raises the bigger question of how to get the wider public interested in demos, and I don't think that's a problem that can be solved by changing compo rules.

Also, if every group did that... on a preselection of say, 15 entries, there might be parties which wouldn't get to show any new production at all.
Plus, democompos might become demoshows because everyone would have already seen those demos.

I believe gasman found the problem...
I dislike this request. While I can totally understand that paniq (and others) as a pro film maker would benefit from this in reality most people _do_ have such a "double life": they simply don't do demoscene-compatible things professionally and thus could not recycle anything (including me; how the hell should I recycle web server software for demos?)
Any demoparty that permits old productions to compos would be way less attractive for me. I prefer seeing never-seen-before productions on the big screen, that's what makes the competitions interesting. That's what makes technically inferior demos with fresh ideas (e.g. the "3 pixel" 4K C64 demo from BP 2010) have a chance. I like surprises during compos. And I'm totally satisfied with winning some short-lived fame for my own productions.

What a fucking terrible idea. Also, what Navis said.
what navis + salinga + gasman said.
thing is demo parties are parties, not demo festivals. People go to parties to drink and see flying cubes, not to hunt for new talented filmmakers-in-the-shadow.
I think for that kind of exposition you already have Bitfilm, MFX, Siggraph, etc for being exhibited in front of film-makers, if that's what you want. I don't say another one wouldn't hurt, more scene oriented, why not, but that would keep it completely separated from demo parties and their rules...

word.
please don't do that, because the result will be
>qualification, party and voting duration 2 months :D

If I really want to get cracking, I'll have to try my luck at a short movie festival with my productions next time.
why don't you go ahead and try it, instead of proposing to change demoparties to film-festivals.. you're talented, i'm sure you can make it there.
i love masagin, and i adore you're work, but i'm happy that i don't have to watch it at every demoparty for the next two years.. also the compos would last for ages if everybody would re-release their stuff..
also what's about that Leonard Ritter thing?! too serious already to have a nickname?
Basically what Navis said.
Also, Demoscene is out of the mainstream. That's one of the most original things in it.

good idea, let's submit all the demos/intros from all former parties at the next easter conference \o_O/
What is the point?
1)It is already possible to release you work at a non-demoscene-party and afterwards enter it into a compo.
2)Making a rob-is-jarig out of all major compo-winners seems rather silly.
3)But yeah : add another compo for 128mb games. Would be great!

this is a bit pointless to discuss, as the idea itself has no benefit at all. you can still re-release your old stuff at the party normally, but for the competition we need fresh ideas/demos *always*.
whats on tv? i am hungry for pizza. i think we can close this thread now :)

i like the point, but i don't see how it makes sense in such an inbred world such as the demoscene, as others pointed out. releasing the same demo at multiple demoparties just doesn't do it for me - too many of the attendants will have already seen is, given what a bunch of pouet.net lurkers we all are.
because of that, i propose to change the rule to "only entries that have not previously been submitted at a demoparty are allowed". exactly what is and what is not a demoparty can, i believe, be easily left up to the organisers (or otherwise the audience, who vote) - pretty few events have an unclear status in this respect.
what do people think? IMHO we could still implement a rule like this at e.g. outline. i doubt it'd make a difference, but still i don't see why we wouldn't :-)

btw. isnt the scene award prize given out to honor a production constant quality impression on viewers throughout the year? sorry i am a bit sleepy , just returned from breakpoint =) so that award is already doing it :)
