MindCandy Volume 3 - demo playlist feedback
category: general [glöplog]
I'll gladly give you both an OK and an audio commentary for "Regus Ademordna"! ..oh, wait.. :(
phoenix: the kahvi video release of aether is a good reference. In that one everything looks as it's supposed to look.
hello there,
not that i am so much unhappy with our work (kosmoplovci) not being included in mindcandy 3 (or hardly any 'demoscene chronology' compilations), but i would really like to know on what basis are demos chosen for mindcandy 3, and if it is not intended to be a 'full picture' view on the demoscene, why is it promoting itself as 'PC Demos 2003-09' implying that 'it is presenting the period in the demoscene as whole, while ignoring the numerous experimental demos that poped up during those years (and i do not think only about our kosmoplovci stuff).
i would really like to enjoy and treat mindcandy as all-round view on the scene, especially since demoscene doesn't have much projects like this anyway, and don't get me wrong - there are plenty of nice demos there in the list, but it seems to me that is going completelly in mainstream direction, thus giving a wrong impression about the demoscene as whole. where are the abstract, experimental, noise and minimal stuff, is there some censorship going on or what?
also i think there are some serious misplacements like putting plastic in 'dark' section... i mean really... what is that dark with the bugs in the sewers and epic fantasy soundtrack... if you want real dark section, let me know i will make the list for free :)
just my piece of thought...

Since Deities is (rightfully) on the tentative list, STS-01 would be an obligatory easter egg.
Masagin is Farbrausch & Neuro, no?
Also, I'd add 'Tokyo' (XPLV) and 'I feel like a Computer' (Melon, potential copyright fuckup be damned) to the list and remove some others, but overall it's a pretty sweet list indeed. :)
I agree with dominator in so far, that the list lacks a bit playfulness/humour/out-of-left-field stuff, but I guess you could add one as an easter egg.

Dominator has a huge point there.
And it is not about playfulness/humour/out-of-left-field stuff (sorry tomaes), in fact to say that is a bit disrespectful to that kind of demos. Proposing to add them as an easter egg is even more rude in my opinion. They're part of the demoscene as well you know...
Of course mindcandy is being done by a group of people, and it's that group of people's decision to include whatever they feel like to the compilation - Which has been a great compilation and effort throughout the years. But yeah, ehmm...
Dominator has a huge point there :)
Oh and shifter is right too, sts-01 deserves a hidden place.

In my opinion, the taste of everyone differs regarding minimalistic/noise demos. Mixing them with (so called) mainstream demos is probably not such a good idea. One solution would be to offer two discs, as in two separate products: abstract/experimental/minimalistic and mainstream/artistic/whatever, you get the image. It's then up to the consumer to decide which product(s) he/she buys.
Quote:
"Pop": 1-5

"Dark": 31-35
It's great that you're producing MindCandy 3. However, it would be good if it wasn't only possible to order it via the Internet or via snailmail, but if it were also possible to purchase it in your local electronic/computers supermarket. I know this isn't your concept - you're primarily producing the DVDs for sceners, enthusiasts, nostalgic persons, collectors,... with one word: "insiders". But that's a pity. I think MindCandy would have a fair enough commercial potential and could be used to attract the masses to the scene...
Adok: yeah... so... do you have the money to back up that idea, or?...
No, I have no money. I just have ideas :)
Adok: then maybe, you should take money into consideration (too) when evolving your ideas.
puryx or maybe he could write his ideas in hugi so we wouldn't have to hear/read them?
uncle-x: that's a even better suggestion, yes :)
To sell MindCandy via retail stores, you obviously need to create a lot more DVDs than otherwise, which costs money. However, I guess that if you produce a real lot of DVDs, you'll get a discount. Moreover, if MindCandy becomes successful, the producers will ultimately earn far more money than they needed to invest in bringing the product onto the market.
uncle-x: ok, i have that video, thanks.
on easter eggs: if we have any, i'd like them to be unreleased demos, special making-of/behind-the-scenes footage (like we had in vols 1 & 2), or like tomaes suggested, funny/joke stuff. otherwise, we're just re-adding demos we cut out because we ran out of space.
xtrim: it will take more time to make 2 products, and won't lower the cost of either one, so now people who like both types of demos are paying twice as much.
adok: we've considered retail store sales, but yes, it would require several thousand more discs to get noticed, and finding a distributor willing to take in something they probably hadn't heard of before. however, we've had a good distributor (microcinema) of "indie" discs for online sales, and they even got mindcandy on the websites of some big retail stores here like bestbuy.com. we've always had it on amazon.com but they take a big chunk of the profits. but, if we find retail stores yearning for blu-ray discs that show off the format, maybe we can get a foot in the door. i'm not expecting number produced to be any higher than before, though.

phoenix any tentative release date yet?
oh, and a disclaimer about the "sets". yes, there are some demos which do not necessarily fit into the "genre" which we listed. some of them serve more as a transition from one genre to the next. also, we wanted to spread similar demos by the same group throughout the playlist, otherwise, most of the asd and plastic demos would be in the same set. :)
dominator: when you're making a disc for the masses, pop is going to win out against minimal/noise. i do admire kosmoplovci's stuff, though. we do have some fairly experimental/artistic demos on the list - chromosphere and 828 for example. oh, and the bleeding baby in into the pink is pretty fucking dark if you ask me. :)

goal is by the end of the year. we don't have artwork or menus yet, but, i think we can pull it off. trixter's new job is sucking more free time out of his day but he's finding new ways around that. :)
Sweet, i can pick one up at the next breakpoint rite?
dominator does have a point. if the idea is to show people what demoscene is all about, it would make more sense to show productions from more wider perspective.
But isn't MindCandy about being able to watch "your" favourite demos on your home-cinema gear (and not in front of the PC)?
I'm not sure if MindCandys main goal is to teach the outside world what the demo-scene is like in diversity content-wise - correct me if I'm wrong.

While dominator has a point, making a DVD/Blu-ray for demosceners to show demosceners what the demoscene is all about is sort of counter-intuitive. People who don't know about the demoscene already are probably not going to be the main customer base for this product. Also, there is a difference between "showing people all the different things from the demoscene" and "showing people things from the demoscene that they'll enjoy", both changing for different audiences of course, which is why making a single, packaged product that can convey the wide range of demoscene "styles" is impossible.
Personally, I find the categorization they came up with rather ingenious. :)

I love the list. Good work!
The playlist llooks good. But agreeing with dominator I would put kolonija in between theta and deities. It's always fun to put that one on gamer parties, and should be as fun to have it on the mindcandy 3.
