HELP! save assembly!
category: general [glöplog]
you must include every possible case in a statement like that :)
"there's been a lot of discussion going on the assembly mailinglist and irc-channel about the future of assembly, which is now at stake. some organisers feel that there is no intrest and thus no need for another party, that the whole thing should be just put to the rest"
Pritty vague!!
this thread isnt based on official statements from asm orginizers..Thus we dont know there arguments
there plusses and minus..
Jeenio your making quite a fuzz here..
I think the asm orginizers are smart enough
to hold an inquiry a poll or something at there website if they wanna know..
So i wont participate any further in this thread.
p.s. as long as ASD wins asm every year i am happy :)

that would be a trully horrible thing to happen.
As far as I can see, Assembly has some smashing productions every year.
WTF?! It's not like demoscene needs Assembly to have good demoscene productions. There has been a demoscene with good prods before Assembly and there will still be afterwards.
And yes, statistically speaking some of the good demos are released at ASM each year, because it's a big Party. Remove ASM and the good prods will move to another big party, big deal.
I'd rather support pure demoscene parties such as Numerica, Tum, Evoke, Outline or Breakpoint.
nothing against gamers btw, being a reasonable gamer myself ;)
Come on, Keops, the Demoscene NEEDS Assembly.
It's old, it's big, it's kind of "the mother of all parties".
If we start giving up Scenish traditions now, we'll soon dine in hell.

jeenio: you're totally forgetting all the people who prefer other species
keops: But at least to keep scene alive we kinda need assembly, the gathering and other parties that are not scene only. Many sceners nowadays are introduced to demoscene by 'mixed' parties.
I am completely happy about these kind of parties and it's sad that many sceners think that a gamer is some kind of a swear word for the scene. Many gamers mostly disrespect sceners because of having bad experiences with arrogant bastard sceners turning them down when they were or were just about to become interested to the scene.

If Assembly would not exist then the whole finnishscene/SUOMISKENE would start to die slowly becorse there wont come any new sceners in Finland.
The good thing in gamers in Assembly is that they see the demos and some of them get interested about demoscene and possibly begin to do demos.

Oh waffle was faster. :F

Nothing against Assembly, but since when demoscene parties started in 1992 with Assembly ???
It's not about giving up scenish traditions, it's about realizing that demoscene does not revolve around Assembly (fortunately) and never did.
"Every scener must go to Mekka / Breakpoint every year, and once in a lifetime to Assembly."

Help save me..
keops: I think that you're being selfish. It's completely clear that with the oldskool style of your productions you can live forever with that without any other audience than oldskool demoscene extremists. Don't forget that there are other groups that want to spread their productions on a larger scale than just on a demoscene playground. And Assembly is a good window to start with. Also I understand that you've already got a good job and don't care too much about your future. Assembly is a great opportunity for young ones to get in touch with a professionals.
And that's why I think we should care about Assembly.
BTW there was a spot showing Assembly at Eurovision song contest :).

Keops : "since when demoscene parties started in 1992 with Assembly"
Don't be narrow-minded, I wrote "kind of"... :)
Keops : "realizing that demoscene does not revolve around Assembly"
Of course not, but still... We're better _with_ the Assembly that _without_ (as in : "We're better _with_ the Breakpoint that _without_ !").

Sorry for the typo... :)

Dear Bonzaj,
and that can be achieve through Assembly only? What a pity...
My job is totally irrelevant. I had an opinion about demoscene and parties long before getting any job. If your motivation for saving Assembly is just to get a job, then I hope you get one really quickly and get out of the demoscene as soon as possible.
Oh, that's interesting, this sounds like the crappiest personal attack ever :)
What is YOUR style by the way? Ripping Devebec's work without crediting it and using ripped commercial tunes from Japan?
In the end, I have nothing against Assembly, my point was that Navis post was a little bit strong: "that would be a trully horrible thing to happen".

JESUS HENRY CHRIST KEOPS...
Can't you deliver an argument without going personal? :((
going personal? Bonzaj described our style and prods with personal attack about oldskool extremists. Am I not allowed to do the same? How confusing :)
Bonzaj: and last thing, calling me selfish because I don't think the end of Assembly would be a "trully horrible thing" is quite funny, considering we made invits for LTP, SOTA, Evoke, Breakpoint and Outline. I even proposed to make an Assembly invit 2 years ago for your information (speaking of which, the orgs did not even bother answering the mail)
But yes, I am probably selfish and don't care about parties :)

I don't see the point in the anti-gamer attitude either. The path to becoming a demo code often goes through gaming.
I wanted to learn code because I had my own opinions on how a game should be. After creating a few games (never finishing them because making levels is so bloody boring) I became more interested in techniques and remembered the demos I'd seen from time to time.
The best part about demo coding versus game coding is that you can focus on exactly what is fun to code and not fiddle around with boring stuff like level design or code robustness. First you may have to meet the boredom of game programming though :)

keops: well of course I'm not a match for your great achievements, but you know what? We made only one invitation couple of years ago for a not so known party in Poland called Symphony. Well this was the last party in our country because It's already gone. Actually I know that you don't care, but there are people who do. And there are still people that know, that every time when we are loosing a single party then something breaks in the community. And believe me that when you wish me to leave you may someday wake up alone in this community. And this is why I used a word "selfish" in the first place.
I don't remember ever seeing keops at asm/bzm.
i don't remember stefan ever juggling with exploding watermelons either!
wait, that's because it didn't happen. my bad.
