Main reason I wanna change is there is no HDMI output on it. Cant get the dualview to work on my new Samsung LCD TV. Works on the VGA input, but not HDMI. Well it works, but then then my monitor wont work.

Geforce 8800GT 512MB is like, srsly cheap.

I've been running my GF8500GT since last christmas...not sure they sell it anymore but I bet if they do it'd be pretty reasonably priced.

Forget about PC and Windows, get a Macbook Pro instead. The number of maccing sceners has been climbing rapidly and it's just a matter of time before everyone else except Pommak has one.

rainmaker: I _might_ get a mac once they open the hardware for competition. I don't like paying more money to get last generation hardware and I also don't like the cult/religion that has risen around Steve Jobs. It reminds me too much of scientology because people spread blindly their things' "excellence" in every situation and I don't want to be involved with that kind of trolling.

On topic: get an nVidia for best compatibility. 8800s are definitely a good choice for their price point.

the whole idea is that it's a mac because *they* made it.

i'm no mac-lemming (do own a regular macbook) but their hardware/os does have a certain sturdyness to it that makes most other hardware look and perform (and i don't mean perform as in millions of funyk polies per frame but rather build quality, battery power etc) flaky in comparison (especially laptops in the same price range). for the largest part this can be attributed to the fact that they carefully select components and build a few machines themselves.

i dont see how it would work if mac were a more 'open' standard. same goes for their os. lots more shit flying their way if everyone started running it on whatever hardware.

What niels said, and if you buy a mac soon after it's updated you tend to get pretty cutting edge stuff for a decent price. Problem is that they don't update it so often and the price stays flat, so after a while it becomes last gen at a high price.
