Teel: The rules says that a professional jury will select what tunes will be played. This is done to prevent that crap music will be played.

Well it's not professional jury. Just some random sceners/other people picked to choose the tunes and apparently they have very bad musical taste ;)

I like the fact that there's all kinds of stuff played in the music compo. The Swedish pop song was good, as was the one that got the third place. Much improvement from the "15 songs of scene-pop" days.

Ok, to be honest, I listened through (more or less) all the entries in instrumental music compo and many of them were that same orchestral etc crap, but there were also some other really good tunes that were not played (maybe because they were not orchestral, but regular electronic music, but well made anyway? who knows).

You all rip, you're all just playing the same 12 notes over and over again.

I watched the 4k now and i think it is fucking brilliant. why on earth would the disqualify such an cool intro? and who the fuck cares about copyrighted material. this shit is not copyed from anyone *caugh*.. and the people behind the intro must be fucking angry on the assembly organisers and never want to make a 4k for parties anymore... well, think of how much time they've spent on making the intro?? i think they did a hell of a good job and they deserve more than a qualificated entry. what the fuck is all this about?

i guess it's much of the same as when they were disqualified at the gathering. twice. once for "remixing" their intro and the other time for releasing their intro at the gathering and breakpoint at the same time. i think exploder said it best "it's for the money"

Surely the author who has competed at asm several times before should've known better about the asmorg policies. GREAT SOFTSYNTH!! But original tunes please (the tune is still very good tho) or a permission from author.

PS. the poetry sucked and I was almost embarrased about it.

PS2. the new winner of 4k compo deserved it. It actually had some concept and very slick execution <3

the organizers said they don't allow copyrighted material - they chose this rule not to get sued by moneyhungry lawyers, not to "limit your artistic freedom which is basically the inability to make original music"
you read the compo contract, and if you entered, you SIGNED the compo contract.
if you get disqualified because you broke the rules, you don't have the right to complain. you HAD TO BE aware of the rules - if you didn't like them, you shouldn't have entered.

a somewhat related question i was wondering about:
is it legitimate/ethical to use a soundtrack/picture in a demo which was previously released in a music/graphic compo? (not necessarily at the same party, also assuming that we do have the consent)

Breakpoint allows usage of previously relased material (including music and gfx) in the submissions to demo- and introcompos - so i think this speaks for Scamp's opinion and/or the opinion of most people in the Breakpoint's core staff. I recall some parties requiere that all material be new.

I think it's OK. This is especially good for groups without a musician, since they can build demos around existing music and they only need to ask the author of permission. And if the group's graphician has already released a picture, then why not reuse the picture in a demo if it fits the subject? If it's just dropped in without fit, it will just be voted down. :)

I'm not sure i like the way Plastic has done it with their demo: first release a part of it as a wild, then as a demo at another party. For one, it's a bit too much advertisement to my taste. And for the other, one could re-release conceptually one and the same demo 4 times, starting with 1 minute, and each time adding another minute of animation. :) Or just imagine everyone would release trailers to demos - the next party is spoiled!

Should it be forbidden or would the (negative) public opinion sort the problem away alone?

is then also okay to release a demo with the same exe-file but new music and new graphics?
