That was two steps, and they're suspiciously similar. I want my money back.
Hmm. Optimus. Pilgrimage.

Hmm.

Hmmm (:

Seriously, I can't think of anything bad about this idea (:
we should organize a fund raising. "bring the kingkong of the scene to utah" fund ;) "dont take pictures! no, please, dont take pictures! you're scaring him! no! please! you're scaring him! he's going wild! no! please, stop!" and then he would break away from all the cpc's and boring lectures and climb the tall tower with the kidnapped girl.

phoenix: it seems that you guys are really trying *not* to get the same atomsphere that we have at REAL demoscene gatherings.
rasmus: you just want to hear them say they wish they had danish like demoparties in the us ;)

it seems that the usanification of the demoscene is trying to get us out of the underground and into big hotels, conventions, conferences, etc.

seems bogus if you ask me. if i'd like to get my code displayed infront of a corporate-looking audience, i'd sure as hell rather code database-stuff than demostuff.

what other demoscene events are held in hotels anyway? :)

Might be wrong, but I think one of the X parties was held in a hotel.

one of those swiss parties were held in a hotel afaik. but the fee wasn't this high..
geekcamp was in some sort of hotel right next to the downhill skiing slopes.

rasmus: "you guys"? "us"? just who are you generalizing here? and who made you demoscene god? i don't think this "denmark uber alles" mentality is going to help any. if you're afraid of companies, then i'm sure you've burned down assembly and all the ati banners at breakpoint, right? sure, the scene in our hemisphere is different (nowadays, at least), but before you start another "usa sux" thread, there's no need for goliath to pick on david.

rasmus + phoenix:
I think you're both exaggerating.

ATI sponsored Breakpoint, still it wasn't a sellout. People still drank beer, used C64 and Amiga, nVidia wasn't kicked out, etc. etc. etc. We just got some nice compo prizes, a really nice presentation (even if some didn't really appreciate it, oh well), all this for some flags on the wall and a big ATI logo on the beamer. So what.

On the other hand, Pilgrimage is surrounded by way too many well-known corporate buzzwords ("seminars", "speakers", "art and technology" or more importantly "alcohol is forbidden" :) to give back the appearance of a BP-like fun demoscene event we're used to. Note that this doesn't mean that
a) all people are supposed to drink themselves to death on a party. no, but beer is somewhat essential, even if for traditional reasons only.
b) pilgrimage will suck. no, but still for the aforementioned reasons, you can understand the doubts of the people who like partying the "standard"-way.

I think Pilgrimage will be cool enough, at least the orgas have the enthusiasm to make it so, just in a different way.

You guys are a riot! I am laughing so hard I can hardly contain myself!

gargaj: well, usa ppl arent used to demoparty anyways so i dont think they'll really be much upset.

still, no alcohol at scene gatherings sounds like a boring event :) its a known fact that alcohol brings people together since 1543 :) if you dont agree with this you should _obviously and immediatly_ see the calodox beertro one more time ;)

ofcourse you _can_ have a demoparty with no alcohol allowed and have lots of fun with the shitloads of usefull seminars and lectures and shit.

but then again i always thought that demoscene was more about watching a demo while drinking a beer with your computer god friend instead of sitting by some dull workshop on how to code a properly envmapped duck using the amazing directx api..
im sure its usefull for newbies, but sociallizing with single minded peeps is alot more important (specially on early stages of a scene ressurection)

_IMHO ofcourse_

hell, what do i know, i only helped ressurect the scene in portugal.. it's not like im optimus who single handedly ressurected the scene in greece.

whats portugal anyways? just a small country on the edge of the old continent where bootlickers keep trying to get a terrorist attack during the euro2004 by putting troops in iraq recently to pretend to support a nation whose large majority of inhabitants still think portugal is a province of spain.

ps you still don't know what you are talking about... where does it say on the Pilgrimage web site no alcohol?
added on the 2004-05-17 18:10:15 by legalize legalize
i'd be surprised if they allowed alcohol in the hotel, they didn't at the #trax party. but then again, they DID have a cash bar on saturday night. how many of your european parties have a full liquor bar set up right in the party's main hall, eh? :)

if there were enough old burly sceners in the us, you could have a pilgrimage tailgate party, much in the spirit of boozembly. :)

and rich, a little respect for ps please, even if he does believe chimera is the best thing to ever grace a pc screen. ;)

I think Pilgrimage sounds fine, if you ask me. The way it's set up appeals to my American mentality more than, say, Assembly. Maybe Americans are weird. That's ok. Weird people need a weird party. ;)

perhaps if pilgrimage were over the border in nevada, around burning man, THEN we'd have something interesting. :)

I'm pretty disappointed with the massive stereotyping of the American demoscene, over generalizations and rampant jumping to conclusions that is taking place in this thread.

The Pilgrimage website has been the same for 2 years now; http://pilgrimage.scene.org/. I strongly encourage giving it a thorough visit before making that next giant leap in the wrong direction. We all know what happens when you ASS-U-ME things. :)

For example, Alcoholics and boozers are welcome at Pilgrimage. ;-) Heh. Nowhere on our site does it say that no beer is allowed. On the contrary actually, as we have a bar and lounge on the main floor of our hotel. The management has actually said, and I quote; "we will keep the bar open 2 hours past closing time" if we give them enough sales. :) This means that PS can (vicariously, of course) live out his Fantasy of sipping a beer, martini or glass of wine (heh) at Pilgrimage.

Secondly, this is not Breakpoint. And while I'd love to attend BP'05, and there is a strong likelihood I'll be there next year -- but I think any party, regardless of geographic location, that attempted to be just-like-Breakpoint would fail miserably. Each party should have its own unique set of fun and different offerings for people and Pilgrimage will be no exception to that rule.

Third, this is not a corporate-funded event. All cash has been paid out-of-pocket. Pilgrimage has filed for 501(3)c tax exemption, which here in the U.S. encourages companies to make donations which they can in turn write off. Last year this allowed us to give away many great things as prizes such as ATI video cards. As with any aspect of a demo party, this is still a huge challenge to be able to provide something as a gift to the competitor, and that status only helps take the edge off... slightly. :) I think for some reason people are picturing us all dressed in 3 piece suits, stiff ties and top hats, haha. No. Come as you are. :)

In closing I'd just like to ask people to try something else for a change: Applaud Legalize for trying to make a difference in the North American Demo Scene. As you know, Pilgrimage is the only demo party happening here and believe me he (and the rest of the staff, too) are working very hard to make this the best North American demo party ever. :)

Oh, and the possibility of a tended full bar in one of our party rooms has not been ruled out as an option, either. In case that walk to the lounge is too far... ;)
