pouet - new platforms

It's "misleading" in the sense that the 32k label usually indicates some form of "achievement"
Like in the case of Atari 2600 "4k-s"? That's mainly where the idea comes from.

The fact that it's a fantasy platform and by definition dependent on much more powerful hosts is a different matter.
FAKE NEWS!
PICO-8 run at the same speed on every computer (except the slowest of course), CPU/mem/framerate is limited by design, so you can consider it as fixed hardware console.
Also it's possible to load data in a cartridge from another cartridge, so not all PICO-8 prod can be 32k only (but most of them are).
@gargaj: p8 or p8.png, hmmm, hard to choose, both can be loaded the same way in PICO-8, but the p8 is readable because it's a plain text file, so you can read the source.
well, logically the p8.png IS the cartridge, so the download link, and the p8 can be linked as "source" :)

gargaj: yeah, although in the case of a2600 that 4k indicator started making more sense once ppl decided to use much larger carts for their prods without mentioning it explicitly, i guess
havoc: So if Pico-8 gets a "64k" upgrade...? :)

Read again what he said. It is dependent on much more powerful hosts, that doesn't say anything about running at different speed on different host, just that you need a host that is more powerful than PICO-8 itself. ;)

That's a big part of it. The whole self-imposed size-limited thing. 64k on 64GB PCs etc.

That's not the point. It still _needs_ that computer. There's no real HW implementation, what's available is emulated on modern SoCs or as web thing. And that computer is not a Gameboy either. The whole fantasy part of Pico-8 is to program a supercharged SNES with pretty pastel colors in modern web lingo, so all the cool stuff without the hassle of digging into a genuine 80s tech platform (where you would not get 128 sprites without flickering issues that easily anyway :) ..and there's _some_ price to pay, as far as HW goes.
gargaj: then i'd probably retroactively see a lot more value in that 32k label indeed, same as with a2600/4k :)
Fair enough; I'm not arguing, just something that occurred to me.
Not sure why you'd need a 32kb label for pico-8, what does it define? Surely it'd be like calling all single part c64 demos 64kb demos?

I do that when submitting my Amstrad CPC prods. I think it avoids some of the "but that's unfair, this other demo looks much better but they're loading hundreds kB from disk! That's cheating!" aspect.
Even if the Pico-8 cannot do more than 32K, if you tag the prods as 32K then people don't have to know the platform to notice the size limit.
Ultimately I guess it depends on who writes the prod and how they chose to tag it anyway?
And finally, what if someone does a multipart demo with several cartridges? Just to prove everyone wrong?

Is that possible?
see also rez' post above ;)

some people even streamed data from the GPIO :D
Funny, if you look at this list, than it seems, that PICO-8 totally rejects all thumbs-down attempts. http://www.pouet.net/prodlist.php?platform[]=PICO-8
if you allow PICO-8, should you create an AMOS category?
I'm not entirely serious, btw, but I think its an interesting point. There are a lot of AMOS demos targetting 060. I just used to think of them as "not very good demos", however, if you think of AMOS/060 as a distinct platform, suddenly you have relatively good or bad demos for a platform that has its own unique set of constraints.
(using assembler banks or extensions then opens up the spectrum vs. enhanced spectrum argument for extra shits and giggles).

Exported AMOS files are standalone though aren't they? While it's kind of nice to know what a demo has been written in it's probably better to put that in the comments.
Hi,
So, now that we have Pico8, we probably should have TIC-80 as well.

Are there 10 TIC80 prods that are not thrown-together-in-10-minutes-in-a-reactive-hissy-fit?
Also, please add Atari Portfolio . A couple of prods (and games) already available for it (and currently very hard to find on pouet) and with some parties holding compos for it i'm hoping it will grow further
