What is demoscene about, according to you?
category: residue [glöplog]
a dance trough, for musical pigs (so response and other darklite musicians)
alcoholism
demoscene... that's something 99% of women do not understand.
It’s actually also something 99% of men do not understand.
It’s something hardly anybody understands.

@Adok what you said deserves its own post

I am currently staying with my girlfriend's family. Yesterday my girlfriend's cousin visited us. This cousin (a young lady) is 18 years old. Her boyfriend is a programmer (just like my girlfriend and myself). Imagine what she said! She said that as I am now 35 years old, I am already an "oldie" and if I lose my current job, I won't get a new job any more since my programming knowledge is "outdated" and I lack the programming expertise which the younger ones have.
As I am far younger than most demosceners, does this mean that the demoscene is a bunch of old farts who once were considered great programmers but nowadays would not have any chance at the job market?
I don't think so, but apparently, that's what the younger generation thinks about us!
Female of Scener is SCENESS ;) ;)
@mop: Yes, and what's your opinion about my statement?
i hope not cause i just quit my job at 35 years old
@adok as an old 47 year, I think the coders of my generation has seen and done it all... Z80 asm, 68000 asm, software rendering on MSDOS, DirectX, shaders... they now have the experience to do their own thing and not deal with the nitty-gritty employers of these days.
@mop: But how do they earn their money? Self-employed?
The reason why I am not self-employed yet is simply that I have too little clue about the market situation, where to get customers, what is in demand, etc.

(I admit I had a lot of "fucked up views about things" in the past as Maali once put it but now, especially as my father is dead and I am living together with more realistic people, I am improving)
@adok either self employed (like myself) or have to deal with the nitty-gritty employers of today. mind you, many employers do appreciate experienced programmers who can come with real world solutions in a matter of hours, so not all hope is lost
@mop: I wrote above why I am not self-employed yet. I have plenty of business ideas so lack of ideas would not be the problem.
Here in Austria competition among programmers might become more fierce in a couple of years since now there is a new apprenticeship called "coding", so you can start this apprenticeship at age 14 and at age 18 you will be a programmer with already quite a lot of experience (depending on the company at which you do the apprenticeship). In addition employers will have to pay the graduates of this apprenticeship far less money than us university graduates. So things aren't bright for us university graduates in computer science. We can only hope that employers will be too stupid to realize that if you make an apprenticeship in programming, supervised by an experienced programmer, you will eventually end up as a far better programmer than any fresh university graduate...

need to say, it's 'cute' to see how most people here think all demosceners are programmers :) maybe it's just the wording though..
I might need to fumigate Pouet after this thread. Again.
awesome shaders!

Only programmers think this tho, don't worry.
my point still applies if most sceners are coders though :P
We should move this discussion to Facebook (group "Demoscene"). There, Gargaj has no power and his annoying threats are empty words.

You do know you're about 3 months into the "stopped being even remotely funny" category, right?

Say what again. I dare ya.
It is sad Gargaj does not approve of us debating real-life problems on Facebook, he seems to prefer living in a fake world and forgets that all of us are humans and most of us are grown ups and have to earn our living ourselves.
Gargaj: you are not funny
