GCW Zero

category: offtopic [glöplog]

I am really waiting for this!

Finally a true successor since Wiz/Caanoo/Dingoo. Once we had Pandora but it was delayed and now it's over 400 euro so it never made the dream. But finally, these people have gone the other way, something quite more powerful, but cut off some stuff (no lcd touch for example) and left only essential (hmm,. both dpad and analog stick) so that it's at pleasant price. 120$ even less than the 140euro of Caanoo.

Though it's delaying but I wanted to inform there will be a Kickstarter soon because I love this project.

Anyone thinking about GCW Zero? I will definitelly give the 135 or more dollars to get one of the consoles when the kick is out.

So, umm, yet another devices to play emulated games on?

Indeed, even though now perfect speed for Amiga and SNES. And maybe dosbox and more.

Demoscene is still living in GP2X though and this is fine and more challenging I guess.

I agree.

Wouldn't it be easier to stick a battery and small LCD on a Raspberry Pi?

These "open" handhelds all seem like relative failures in my opinion. Raspberry Pi at least has some traction.
Come to think of it, maybe there's a business opportunity here. A DIY handheld kit for the Raspberry Pi: LCD, controls, and battery in an easy-to-assembly made-to-fit plastic housing.

Sounds good actually, but the DSI display connector isn't functional, because the GPU firmware currently doesn't drive it. It will probably need another firmware blob to do that...
Everything else is too slow, too big or looks to shabby.

Guess we'll have to wait.

ATJ2279B CPU, 450MHz max., 256MB RAM.

Oh. And: http://blog.parts-people.com/2012/12/20/mobile-raspberry-pi-computer-build-your-own-portable-rpi-to-go/
Looks like crap btw.

There are tons of much cheaper Chinese consoles that I have lost it. It's just that GCW is from community and seems lot's of people from gamepark/dingoo see it as a positive next successor, so there might be more support and a community.

I actually dont think the raspi is fast enough to handle fullspeed emulation beyond old 8bit systems.

Well, if GP2X could do it (perfect Mega Drive, ok SNES, even GBA) and the Caanoo (almost great SNES, even better GBA, slow PSX) then the Raspberry can definitely do it.

Rpi is good for SNES-class emulation. MAME games run so-so depending on the game, even when overclocked... Didn't try GBA any or PSX games.
It heavily depends on the emulator too and I think this will improve over time. The EmulationStation project downloads basically all you need to get going.

That's fucking hideous! Even building it out of LEGO would've been more attractive *and* ergonomic.
I like this one: GamePi
i have a x10 mini from SE. have put a bluetooth gamepad on it fitting to the keyboard.
it can handle every console up to psx and n64. paid 50€ for a used device.
display is big enough for playing games on it and battery has power for hours.

so why should someone need this?
For anyone interested (?) the kickstarter has begun earlier than I was expecting it.
