I don't know why, but I now notice everytime how most modern tracks just compress the base drum together with most harmonies (bass, chords), and while hearing the track I figurally see the volume SAW envelope in my head, while my brain explodes from the pressure. Here as well.

I'm not sure if it's just me specifically, who suffers from some sort of earcancer when hearing that, or is it that it's become normal to do such an overkilling heavy compression? If so, WHY? To make the base drum "louder"? more punchy?

I don't believe the compression here should be taken so literally.

xTr1m: Pumping compression has become somewhat of a "meme" in electronic dance music, beyond "just" being a tool to make the material appear louder. There has been criticism of this practice, just google loudness war. But I think it's something we'll just have to learn to accept. I'm sure there were people who thought guitarists were crazy for overdriving their guitar amps in the beginning.

So what is Polymassif? My guess is something music related. Either a DAW or a polyphonic synthesizer.

Orrrr, a multiband compressor!

that's got to be the most static web-demo i've seen all year.
nitro2k01: French House style compression shouldn't be confused with maximizing the shit out of your tune to be the loudest (aka loudness war). Surely you can get your music to be louder by pushing away everythingw with every bass drum hit, but that's different from adding loudness.
Regarding my post from 2012-12-08: THIS is exactly what I mean: http://vimeo.com/34035823 starting at 1:18... this hurts in my ears.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpq7kJgjyGk I always liked the effect in this, not sure if it's compression though.
