Demos made with tools like ZGameEditor

category: offtopic [glöplog]
Are they inferior in any way to you, or tool or language used doesn't matter as long demo is fun to watch?

Personally I want to make demo with tool mentioned in thread's title and want to know your opinions before I do it.

Why do you care about my opinion?

Because I do :P. I do not want to invest time in some prod that I will be blamed for only because I used wrong tool.

as long as you keep it 'demoish' the people who will blame you for using a readily available game engine will be small in numbers (alltho probably exist).
if the product is crap, however, dont expect much praise/motivational thumbs.

it's not the machine, it's the man :)

you'll always get shit regardless of what platform you chose.
so it's best to pick one you're comfortable with and that allows you to try and push it's limits somehow. if you do that creatively enough someone will eventually give you some thumbs up, even if it's just for being insane enough to reoccuringly abuse that platform.

don't elude yourself though, you'll always get some haters. that will happen regardless of your chosen platform.

as long as you have fun doing something creative, it'll be worth pursuing. and that's what you should be aiming for. the rest is ego wanking.

wise words.

Just do stuff with whatever tools you prefer. If some people don't like it, it's their problem and not yours.

darkhog: use whatever you want to use. If any old farts give you shit ask them how they sticking to Assembler is working out these days.

Actually, quite well - but I wouldn't consider myself an "old fart" yet ;)

Nice-looking tool, btw.

las: I should have added "..for the scene" :)

For the scene? For 1k/4k? Still quite well.

Pure assembler seems to be good enough to score scene.org award nominations...
To rephrase in a non-misunderstanding way: use whatever tools you wish, because the demoscene is quickly running out of people actually making stuff, let alone stuff watching. :)

indeed. just dont clonebrush your graphics too
Darkhog: I will hate you for it. But I'll also hate you if you design and hand-manufacture your own demo-specific platform and toolchain entirely from scratch. Takeaway: I hate you, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Now make a demo about it.

Plus what Maali said. The demoscene is quite sensitive about brushes.

Use whatever tools you like, but be open about it. Try hiding it and pretending you coded it from scratch and you'll really get some shit ;)

and dont use wood textures ;)
use ponies!

Preacher wins. And 100% assembler coding wins too.

Two requirements for a demoscene production
1/1. it is released (otherwise there is no production)
2/2. it feels like something, at least to its creator
(3/2. it's fun to create)

I can't see this ZGameEditor as violating these. Haters will hate, etc. Don't care about them. The only problem with a lot of thumb-downs is that if you sort things by thumbs, the prod might not come up at the top.

Besides, you can get back at the thumb-down wankers in your next demo by for example shouting their names and showing nasty garbage.
