No, this is not really a scene-related topic. I would like to ask for your help to relieve the pain from an old friend o'mine, who's living his last old days.

He is Alfa, a German shepherd at age 12. He has been my most faithful, best friend for all of his life, and now cancer has found its way into his once rock hard body. He has just returned from hospital today, after a very dangerous operation, probably the last one he ever survived. There's no much hope: they saved his life for half a year, or more, but his tumor will regrow. My eternal friend, who I spent my youth years with, is passing away.

These days he's also suffering from a nerval disease, which causes heavy urination problems. If it's not relieved with some drug in a short time, he'll have to be cathetered twice a day, which is, besides of a torturous operation, can be very dangerous itself. But the necessary medication is not available in Hungary. Hence I'd like to ask for your help, some of you might be able to get these pills and send them over, so the last days of Alfa can pass as he deserved during a lifetime.

The name of the pill is Myotonin, but it can be substituted with any other product that contains bethanecol chloride. (Actually the doctor wasn't sure if Myotonin contains it, so it has to be checked.) It needs to be prescribed by a doctor, but Hungarian docs can't even prescribe it. Of course we'll pay all the costs, whatever comes.

I'm sorry to hear about this situation, Tomcat. I spoke to my sister who is a veterinary nurse, but she tells me it's illegal to take or give out any prescription drugs without examining the animal first and having his/her details on record.

It may, however, be possible to order the drugs from a practice outside of Hungary, but I expect you will need to provide some kind of documents.

Yes, it's both for humans and animals. Anyway, the keyword is "bethanechol chloride", not Myotonin, that's just one kind of a drug.
So far I managed to find them on sale in some US and Canadian webstores. We'll see if they ship to Hungary.

Hmm...well, if it's human medicin as well....might there be a chance to get it from any internet-pharamcy shop? Like doc morris from the netherlands or similar?

Seriously Tomcat I am very sad for you and this is a really upsetting thread. I hate to see animals suffer.

Have you looked at non prescription remedies? They might non be exactly what was recommended but they could work just as well.

Thanks for all the good wishes and offers to help. Seems Canada is the solution, there's an online drugstore that sells Bethanechol chloride. Fortunately someone has already offered to get it. We'll see if bureaucracy fucks the entire thing up or not...

I'm trying to contact a friend of mine who is a pharmacist to ask him if the substance is available in Greece. Can't promise anything though the substance was not available in the UK and possibly not available also here in Greece. All the best for Alfa, Tomcat.

Hey, good news! Alfa's problems decided to settle at different symptoms, and stop requiring hard to get medication. Now his urination is not blocked, it turned into the opposite, incontinency, but it's already wearing off even without medication.

Tomcat, this is ofcourse very saddening. But. When is it time to say "he suffers too much, it's probably time to stop his suffering"? I know it's hard, because we all are egoistic and we don't want to let go. But your friend is obviously very sick from time to time. If the cancer not is treatable you only prolong his suffering, no?

I kind of agree with stefancrs. Our family dog got put to sleep two weeks ago, due to jaw-cancer. I'm just glad it happened before he had to suffer too much.

I agree too. But Alfa is not even remotely close to that state. He'll surely reach it someday, but at the moment he is fit, fine, and ready for action, although quite slow.
