Why do ENGLAND still play football?
category: offtopic [glöplog]
Successful trolling, perhaps?
or why do they still go to the eurovision song contest?
Well, we like to show the world our great players. Which is good. It's just a pity we don't really have a team for them to play in.. a bunch of great individual players just don't cut it against an 11-man team.
what is ENGLAND?
Why do people care?
It's state of the United States.
From midfield onwards they didn't do to bad except Gerrard, he sucks in almost every international i've seen and the worst captain you could imagine, never any sign of encouragement to his fellow players. Terry should have been the captain. It's just the defence was awful, Upson is our 4th choice defender after all and didn't have any rapport with Terry.
And who knows what would have happened if that goal was allowed...England would have still had the same problems in defence though i'd imaging.
We sailed through the qualifiers but as usual we fuck it up somehow in the WC.

Oh, goddammit!
what goes around, comes around
oh, and just like the BBC commentators said. The Wembley-thing is now finished, forever.

Maybe if the footie team went to Eurovision and our Eurosingers played football? Maybe not.
as a german, i am very happy with the outcome of course, but it sucks that it had to be like that. i easily could imagine how i'd feel if a goal that important would have been rejected to germany, and i felt very sorry for the opponent. not easy to recover from something like that, and i'm almost certain it would have changed the game drastically. maybe i'm wrong here, but i think despite the 40 minutes of englands pressure we deserved to win.
i'm impressed by most of the english players and the yellow press, who didn't make the disallowed goal the only reason for their defeat. real sportsmanship there. just what i was expecting from a great sports nation. i don't think argentinian or italian players would have done the same (i even doubt it for our own selection...)!

Yeah England screwed themselves, so based on our performance almost this whole tournament we defo deserved to loose. At times we did look really nice up front, just a shame the back sucked ;p
Nah, the disallowed goal was clearly the reason we lost. I mean come on, we hold USA and algeria to a draw, and even actually beat slovenia, and people believe we'd lose to germany? ;)
Non-england-specific observation: anyone else notice that a lot more shots are going way over the goal since the new helium-filled ball was introduced?

Here is a pile of dirt. It's probably not going to win the World Cup.
The pile of dirt is, however, far more interesting than whether or not England was cheated out of a goal, or if they might have won otherwise.
@doom: to you maybe it is, but being a football player since i was a little child to me it is not only interesting, but something to discuss about. not with you, obviously, but there might be some english sceners that maybe feel the same way.
other than that: i'm very afraid of argentina.

i would have liked germany to play 4-4-2 too, but after this game even i have to admit, that it seems outdated. apparently, football too is a trend sport, and capello didn't get on board in time...
england should have played 4132, with wingbacks (like cole and his amazing pace) making intermittent runs down the flanks. this formation would have offered then the extra defense they clearly needed but also kept some fluid and dynamic support for attack on the counter. their managers are always uninspired and i could do a better job after many years playing Football Manager on my PC.
unbeatable :)
For England, soccer is a game that is played with 22 players, begins with a coinflip, and ends against Germany.
