Stop bitching around...

category: general [glöplog]
... we're sceners, not chicks! There is so much disappointment going on in the comments here at Pouet, i don't get it. Is it that more and more "consumers" joined Pouet who don't really understand what demomaking is all about? And what about many older sceners bashing the few new people trying to get their foot in the door?

I've never been a too actively posting person here but i'm reading a lot. I still dig watching demos and try to understand the approach of those making it. Every production, even the bad ones should get the respect they deserve. And if somethings not living up to your personal expectations - maybe you're screwed, not the thing you're watching. Since when does a production need a right to exist?

Such a bigtime attitude fail - what's goin on?

Care to elaborate?

i agree with rp and propose the following steps to get rid of negative attitudes:

- abolish the downthumb
- immediate ban for every negative/ironic/otherwise funny comment, such to be judged by rp
- weekly holding-hands-session, accompanied by kumbaya singing and skrebbel playing the ukelele
- monthly "consumer" bashing using baseball bats decorated with rusty nails

who's with me, for greater glory?

Rowley,

i'm not talking about negative attitudes or thumb downs. Nothing against a good fashioned "damn, i hate dis shit!". That's the way it goes. But not in the vein of "nah, the flowers are not fitting the carpet" kind of pussy way, pls. Which is kind of taking over (imho). Got me now?

What he means is "go make a demo about it."

yeah, this is happening to everything really. movies, music, etc.
people don't judge by quality any more, but by how much something is what they expected it to be, or what they were told to expect it to be.

yesterday i was reading the imdb forums for the movie "where the wild things are". it's a very fluffy and childish looking movie, but it's actually an adult drama. and everyone who said they didn't like it fundamentally said that they expected a childrensmovie and were unwilling to interpret it otherwise.

TROLLS !

as all societies are structured this way I can't imagine we will get rid of it. lot of people search attention by posting. they lost the normal way of getting in contact with others and try to compensate it.
best way would be to ignore those comments, because the more you give them attention, the more those people feel satisfied. ;)

It's called feedback! We appreciate the criticisms of our demos. It makes us try harder.

Trolls are as old as people are gathering, but i face a change here. Otherwise i wouldn't have mentioned it. Like or dislike whatever you want, but since when do we tell others how they should make their demos in order to make it live up to your personal expectations? It's tiresome.

Maybe it just exists in my mind. I asked because i wanted to hear more opinions.

i understand your feelings and i totally agree

i'm bored of seeing messages like :

"classic effects, nothing new, we are in 2010 stop cracktros"

or

"already seen"

or

"boring, crap music etc."

AS IF POSTING A PROD (of any kind) ON POUET WAS A PERMANENT CONTEST, WAITING FOR PEOPLE TO VOTE.

people didn't understand that pouet was a database (with comments) and showroom, and not an online-demoparty contest.

I agree with rp a little. You've got to encourage the beginners to create. Its harder for them to get gfx up on the screen and it feels SO GOOD once it all works. That is until they post it on pouet heh.

The way I approach this problem though, is to put all my worst stuff up on pouet. =D

meaty: true. There is however the line between wanting to try harder and getting your spirit broken into a "Well fuck it then."
On a side note speaking of flowery carpets. Ephemera has ofcourse beautiful flowers on the carpet. A nice rose based pattern with a yellowish tint on a beutiful red hue. Oh fuck, gotta finish it's final before getting totaly fucked up by this.

shouldn't we all be investing time and effort in creating stuff for the easter weekend, instead of yammering on a forum, that was considered having a "loose cannon" community 8 years ago ?

and I agree ... the "know it all"-style bitching has increased ... as it has throughout the net.
I has become the biggest "smartass" grid ev4r.

But as the first lines of The Boondock Saints II go:
"You've got your Talkers and you've got your Doers.
Most people are just Talkers, all they've got is talk."

whynot: Been wanting to watch that film but never got round to it. I know it was directed my Spike Jonze, so I know what to expect from the film, but not entirely in a bad way.
well, I guess there is a line between "scene translation could do with some work" and "I fucking hate you cunts i'm going to fucking kill you" :-D

yeah :) But I'm not talking about that kind of possitive feedback. That kind is ofcourse very welcome and hels inspire new solutions. Luckely we have had more of that kind lately ;)

I love how rp started a thread bitching about how people are bitching too much.

I really could not care less if you people like what I make or not. Maybe for the newcommers things are a bit harsh and that may be demotivating. but after a while you learn who you care what think and who you don´t care what think. I have that filter on when I read comments on the prods I am involved in and it works great.

Some people like everything made on their favorite platform and hate everything else and those are best ignored.

the voting system is a bid unfair on pouet though. a 0-10 system with anon voting would be a lot better. :)

People have an opinion like they have an asshole. And so do I. If I think a demo is crap, I write: "I think this sucks. Music is shit and graphics could have been draw better by my retard baby-chimp...". You as the creator should take whatever constructive criticism there is and don't give a rats ass about the rest.
Eat some cement. Harden the fuck up.
To me it seems like it is easier than ever to build something half-decent with all the libraries, tools etc., but still the amount of crap productions is increasing disproportionately.
Kein Applaus für Scheiße.
