Demoscene TV App version 1.0 is available for free on App Store! After 15.02.2010, it will be available in full version for 9.90Euros/year for VOD & Playlists, to support Demoscene.tv, but Channels access will remain free !

Owing to an Apple restriction, 3g video stream is not available but we are working on it. Thanks to Cedric Bresson aka Kor/Wipe for the dedicated Iphone development. Your feedbacks are welcome.

The app is great too - rating + comments are all there. Only thing I spotted was a slightly ugly logo - please ask kor to add UIPrerenderedIcon = true to the app's info.plist to get rid of that shine :)

Nice :) It is actually pretty well designed! One minor annoyance and one bug:

- The pink: toooo much pink
- The comments are cut off after four lines or something

9:90eu is expensive for an iphone app - it would be more than I've paid for anything else. I'll consider buying it though to support you.

Oh, the video should respond to accelerometer and be able to flip like the ipod app with respect to iphone orientation.

I'm guessing the app will stay free, but you'll have to pay $10 to unlock on-demand videos + playlists for a year as an in-app purchase?

Maybe there could be some discussion about the ramifications of this app here instead assuming that the subscriber model is implemented. Considering the presumed user base of this app, would the fees even be enough to cover the development/hosting costs?

Whining about the 10€ / year sum will be considered retarded. As you guys can afford your iphones surely this isn't the issue ;)

I find it highly doubtful that the subscription-model (for VOD) will be implemented, given the outspoken reactions of the rights holders in the prod comments.

As I see it, DTV has three options:

1) Leave the app as it is: free, with all content available.
2) Release an update to the app, similar to 1), but with a donate/nag-screen (this also stops Apple from taking 30% of your app "sales")
3) Release an alternate ("Premium") version of the app with more features, exclusive from DTV (as in: content they own or features related to the app and not the demos available through it). It is however, as el-bee point out, highly doubtful they'll make much from this version of the app.
4) Retract the app from the App Store.

Also: I have an iPhone and I really enjoy the app. I would have no problem donating some euros to DTV for further development of the app and to insure it stays on the App Store, but only as long as it is freely available.

Or, indeed, four options :)

What's wrong with them charging for the app? I don't see why sales of the app shouldn't be a method of funding DTV. I don't think subscriptions are a good idea, but a one off charge for downloading the app seems totally fine to me.

The problem is that they would then be selling other people's property without paying them. Even so, charging for something that shows demos just seems wrong in the first place.

You could very easily argue that it's just a service - they're not selling the demos, they're giving away a free app, with the buy-in option of using playlists and VOD on your iPhone. It's not like they're handing over the source code to someone.

If you don't want your IP to be a available on this service because of the charge for 'premium' functionality, e.g. playlists and VOD, it's only fair that you should be able to withdraw it from DTV.

But this issue is apparently incredibly political. It'd be interesting to hear what the DTV staff themselves have to say about it.

oh and gloom: your/uncle-x's donation idea is win - especially if it means apple don't take 30% cut, I didn't know donationware apps had that added bonus.

Plaf is right, they would not be selling demos, they'd be selling an application that lets you use their service on your iphone. If you don't want to pay you can just go to their website on a PC or a device that supports flash.

You can't combine outreach and fundraising in one product because outreach has to be free for people to take interest. Nagging them to donate to DTV sucks because then you really are profiting off other people's work: cool demos make non-sceners donate to DTV. Wtf.

Given the size and signal-to-noise ratio on the app store I doubt many non sceners will download this app even if it is free. This app is clearly for people who already love the demoscene and want to watch their favourite demos on the go, and it should be sold as that to those people.

Alternatively if you don't want to buy this app you could just use the built-in youtube app which is free and works over 3G.

well tbh I think havoc nailed it somewhere.. this bug up people's asses isn't about the iphone app, it's about DTV having a full-time employee.

Yes, as with most things in life, there is always an awkward and inconvenient alternative. However, I'd prefer the convenience and consistent video quality of the DTV app. :)
