How about a good size-coding compo revival...

category: code [glöplog]
Anyone remembers the good old Hugi Size-codeing compos?

These have always had a good entertainment value for the old farts, partly inactive sceeners, newbs and scene-rockstars alike.

I'd like to have such a compo again. Online is okay.. We should ditch the 16 bit stuff (boring and useless) and directly go to 32 bit. Rules need to be changed as we obviously can't generate coms in 32 bit. Raw .obj file-size may be a new measure and allows a second level of low-level hacking.

Anyone besides me interested? I would volunteer and do the orga unless noone else wants to do this..

I mean, come on: Nowadays the youngsters write 4K in C++. We gotta show them how we did it back then.

I'm personally more interested in participating, but doing orga is okay as well.

Cheers,

Torus^Cubic&$een (from the old sceener fart department).

You need a special compo for that? There are 4k compos at almost every party, go for it :) One thing I always disliked about the Hugi size compos was that the topics were mostly dull.

Here, I fixed that for you ;)

Pfft. The size compos were pretty cool in their own way and didn't work on the basis of spamming people or publishing nazi articles. I learned a thing or two about assembler while looking at the entries.

Sir: Leg erst mal einen hin.. Dann reden wir weiter..

Preacher:

Well - he idea behind isolated size-coding this is simple: Doing a 4k at the standard we've reached these days is not something you can do over a weekend or so.

The idea about a size-coding compo is that you can participate even if you have limited time. E.g. you may be able to participate, have fun and do a good place even if you (like me) aren't a wiz in vertex and pixel-shader things..

Pure low level coding so to say..

torus: Just an excuse to make your ego happy? I suggest you instead try to learn new technologies. Move on. No one gives a shit to how many polygons you can render nowadays. I am amongst those youngsters who write 4k's in C++ according to your definition. And here's what I have to say: I am sick of you guys telling us "in the old days we did it like this, there were no shaders back then, it was the true coding!!!!". Get fucking over it and challenge us.

So basically you want a handicapped compo? :)

And yeah, I too miss the "old days" sometimes (especially since I now have the programming skills and knowledge that would've rocked the scene back then because the quality really wasn't that high compared to modern times) and resent that things have become a lot harder to do than in the past, but I don't think that's an excuse not to try. Nothing prevents you from doing a software rendered intro in Windows, or doing an Amiga intro (guaranteed limited low level coding and hardware), or learning shader programming (you don't become incapable of learning things when you reach 30, you know..), or something else.

Just make "something" with a 1999 methods and release it on pouet or at a party somewhere, I'm sure that a lot of people would like that as well (myself included, most likely).

and by us deciphers means everyone EXCEPT me, only challenge me if you would like an easy victory ..

but i will compete in schnaps drinking whenever you want ;)

I BEG YOUR PARDON, what the devil are you scallywag talking that gibberish for .. i'll bet im still among the youngest 20% of breakpoint visitors this year .. since i've only been in the scene since 1996, thats kinda the youngest 20% i guess ;)

(but i see your point, i'm becoming an old fart, staying in hotel and enjoying a shower and brushing teeth every morning)

Decipher lol come on, you wrote this as if you won breakpoint with your c++ 4k intro ;) how could these old asm guys challenge you if you're just trolling on pouet? ;)

Who says we're using C++ or even C?

How about this:

We make a compo. A team of old vs. a team of new. The rules are compromized to be challenging for both.

100 percent 32-bit ASM, 4k (or how about 1k??). All this and make a big shader intro. Best of both worlds :)

Objections? takers?

IMHO, size coding is boring, anyways (yea, bash me!)

well, maybe not if you are coding the "bare metal", but at least on todays very-very-high-level OS environments (libraries, 4gig of OS installation to pick files from.., most of the stuff does not work on my machine, ... :P)

A meaner self of me would claim that size coding is often an excuse for a boring/average product. but hey, it's small so it must be cool..

however, what's wrong with youngsters, c++ and shader languages?

it's the result that matters (at least that's how I used to know the "old" scene, too) and there happens to be some pretty amazing stuff in 4k (hey TBC!)

and just like in the "old" scene, there is also lots of "average" stuff and few products that really stand out.

technical evolution works best if we build on old stuff and take it for granted (like rasterizers, which you do need to write yourself since you have GL/D3D).

Torus: Who cares about the .obj size ? it's about the size of what you need to actually run the intro, on any given platform :)

Who writes their intros in C++ anyway? but by all means, teach us!

also, what ryg said.

Kidding, but I really think a compo like this could be a good idea ;)
