Future Crew's Unreal ][...

category: general [glöplog]
Just wanted to know, if anyone was present when they first presented this demo. How was the ambiance? The crowd must've gone nuts (with PM's nice soundtrack)...

Every time I hear the soundtrack I say to myself: If I could turn back time...

"Unreal ][ demo"? So you mean, take Second Reality, remove all the decent stuff (intro and finale) and only leave the cheesy Amiga-demo-wannabe with the even cheesier wannabe-Italodisco soundtrack?
I was there, but I was outside boozing at the time.

PC SUCKSSS!! AMIGA ROOOOOLZ!

I pretty much went, "no way they can push that many pixels on screen" all the time. Well, as it happens, they could.

I loved Second Reality until we made MindCandy 2. Seeing all of the Second Reality effects in Amiga demos -- done months or years earlier -- really ruined it for me.

In fact, I'd argue pretty heavily that Unreal and Panic (especially Panic) were better demos for their time period.

I was there. The whole party was pretty much "Amiga rooolz! PC Sucks!" until the moment they showed SR. Then Amiga people started crying and went home. Seriously. Ok maybe i exaggerated a bit with the crying part.

I agree for the most part that many things from Second Reality is more or less directly taken from the amiga scene - but the quality of the code is quite high in Second Reality and I don't believe the "other way to scroll" and sword part is used in any amiga demos before - I think that was quite unique. I think it's done as movelists, but I'm not sure.

not too many people were present at the party when hyperventilation was released, but that was a stunner for sure!

Seems strange but that was the same question I was asking Sunday @ IRC...

Other way to scroll?? Sorry can you explain?

@ LovCAPONE -- Well, it was "another way to scroll" part - if you've actually seen the demo :-). (The part with the scrolling and trees in the foreground).

ah I remember the day when I saw it for the first time. It was a bright August day of 1993. My friend amoivikos gave me the discs saying " it is better than unreal" . I ran to my house to try it on my 386dx with SB.

I was very surprised ofcourse, thought it was the best thing ever. But what really caught my attention was that rotozoomer, which was very unexpected (I had never seen a rotozoomer before). There were some heated discussions after that in our local bbs gathering where I was claiming that it was probably an animation rather than an "effect" (yeah as if streaming the animated images from the hard disc on a 386 with 4megs of mem was less hassle).

It then took me about 2 years to find out how to do most of the effects on second reality, including the rotozoomer, the plasmas, the voxel landscape and polyfillers. Ofcourse SWAGs and the fact that computers got faster helped alot ;-)

So, how do you do Second Reality plasmas? I've tried out different sin/cos/whatever combinations, but I've never made a plasma look that nice :D I think those things could be plugged in a 2009 demo and no one would complain.

The rest seems mighty easy from today's standpoint.

I mean the high-color trick with the plasmas. I think they are still sin/cos combinations with different phases for r/g/b

Hmmm, 1 glöp... Don't think he knows what we're talking about. :)

As a rather young demoscener, the first time I saw Second Reality was in 2005, and it was the first real demo I've ever seen (apart from some QBasic demos) - After I've read the article "A scam artist called Jay" which I've found at The Mod Archive. That really got me into demoscene.
Wow Saga! I didn't know that you was in the scene with that article...

Anyway I've got really angry when I've read that

Soda: you heard that timbaland also ripped of a scener? The world is mightily unfair son!
