What about a "similar to" feature for prods????
category: general [glöplog]
The idea is to have for each prod some links to other prods that are similar to the current one. The similarites will be created by users (nothing automatic).
I think i would be nice to do this : "this intro is cool ", is there another one with the same style?
eg : State of the Art <-> 9 Fingers

Unfortunately with all the unproductive and bored trolls around, a feature created by users would end up being a pile of shit and a flamewar.
Not to mention that it would be some totally subjective info.
Then the authors would start asking why their prod was tagged as similar to another one they hate, whining, complaints etc...
Not the kind of thing Pouet needs imo, not done that way anyway :)

The smell of sweat!
A slightly similar but automatic - and thus hopefuly less prone to trolls - idea would be to list the prods thumbed up by those who thumbed up, or down the current prod.
yes
p01: with that system debris will have 100k similar prod tho :)
Sure. It won't bring much value for over popular prods.
And of course the list should be limited to say 10 prods. IIRC, Amazon.com limits the " people who bought this also bought ... " to 5 items.

Keops is right - a mouthwatering recipe for disaster. Anyway, you know what they say about pouet development: "you can't polish a turd"!
Anyway, two axioms negate this proposal. The first is that the spirit of curiosity which comes instinctively to eager scene beavers allows them to navigate through the context in which one prod exists so that they can find others which are similar. The second is that prods which beg this sort of connection being made usually inspire discussions of that nature in their comments - I bet the 9 Fingers comments contain a link or at least many textual references to State Of The Art. Admittedly, this won't happen so much with less prominent, less significant prods in which case...who cares? ;) If you feel strongly about it, say so in a comment - that way the aforementioned curious scener will be pointed in the right direction. The case for the inevitable false positives has been made, and doesn't really need to be reiterated: a list of the top 10 prods from a much bigger list which is itself meaningless is still meaningless!

if it's done automatic (so based on statistics, law of big numbers basically), the not-so-popular demos will remain insignificant.. so there's nothing to gain there. if it's done on a user level, what the hell does 'is similar to' mean? if two demos contain red, they're already similar? if they have a goa soundtrack? if they're greek? iow. nice idea, hard to execute :)
better question: is debris and lifeforce similar just because everyone thumbed both up? :)
more usable would be having credits in the database, so you could search demo made my same coder or same musician or same graphician.
gargaj: Not in content, but in rulage yes.
But my suggestion was more something like : " Hey since you [dis]liked this prods, you might appreciate these ". And the list could/should filter out the prods you already thumbed.

Nosfe has the best idea, I'd say.
nosfe: that's already implemented in demozoo
to clarify :
"similar factor" is not applicable to all prods, since some demos are just clones, with not original content(a demo with simple 3d obj + cam, with no real theme)
eg of similar stuff :
http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=18351
http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=743

i'm with nosfe on this issue.
I'd actually vote for tagclouds. They would also be helpful for inventing funny "genre names" for productions!
tags would be awesome.
kusma, yeah but id rather have it here than have the need to use another site just for that.
i bet for every kosmoplovci prod tagged as "art shit"
I would like a tagging for:
- single team members (so users can search for a coder or musician)
- tested hardware (which graphic cards does a demo support?)
Also a reference to Nectarine and D.TV would be nice.

tagging!
When you see Stefan and Unseen about a new feature, you know it will go all wrong...
Nosfes idea is actually really good. And i guess it would be rather easy to implement to.
